Best CD Player for $300?

hi everyone, this is my first post. i've looked through the forum and couldn't find a clear answer on the lower end of CD players. My CD player lens recently broke and I've decided I want to go for something more than the $130 range Sony type CD players... I think it's time to buy something really nice without breaking my bank. I'd love to stay at about $300, if possible. Could someone school me on what the best players are for the money? I don't care a lot about SACD, but I would like to be able to play CD-Rs.
Thanks!

Sorry to be completely naive about home audio, and i'm sure you've answered this question countless times before but i have always dreamed of having a good speakers/components to complement my love of listening to music (all kinds)-i m going to have about 5000 to spend and have looked at vandersteens, b& ws and others-i know that ultimately it's what i feel sounds best, but i'd love some suggestions from you experts on what your opinions are-any advice would help!

thanks

Thorens hum

Hi All. I have a Thorens TD-150 MKII since it was new (well almost, talked a kid out of it in college after three months of drooling over it). I replaced the tonearm wires with the proper 'hair', color coded wires and also the RCA cables. Al this improved the sound somewhat significantly. But here's the rub-with the arm at rest and the volume gain turned all the way up, I have almost no noise/hum. Turn on the motor and I have much hum going on at even under half volume and I can hear it on silent passages or in-between cuts. I never had this problem before but the turntable IS old now.

no sound, on my computer

My dad gave me this computer from his work, they got all new ones so he gave me one of the old ones, he was pretty sure it had a sound card.

my problem is i have no sound.
i have tried several things, i have headphones pluged into the back where the speaker port is, i have checked to make sure it is in tight, i tried to get into volume control but it doesnt let me get in, when i try to get in through the recorder, the tabs for playback and record are unaviable.

any ideas....

thanks
