Alastair Robertson-Aikman (1924–2006)

One cliché that never loses its aptness is "end of an era." And it certainly applies to the passing on October 29 of SME’s founder, Alastair Robertson-Aikman. While there remain a handful of survivors from the original "golden age" of audio, few of them were still active in 2006. AR-A, as he was known to friends and staff, wasn’t simply still active: he was still tweaking his sound system and planning new products.

I just discovered the neurobiology website Beta Rhythm, which is so densely packed with information that it'll take me ages to pore over. The best post I've found yet is this one about sound.

I have a pair of Ohm Walsh 2's that can be upgraded to Super Walsh 2's for 750.00 pair. They fit my small living room (12x18) and I've always enjoyed there full room stereo. Or since I also need a new amp should I start new with $1200.00 speakers and eventually build a multi channel system?

What is it with SACD imaging?

Like almost everyone's, I suspect, a large chunk of my music collection is on CD. Six months ago I needed a new CD player, and after some careful auditioning, I bought the Marantz SA11S1. It does a terrific job with Redbook CD's and it also provided me entry into the SACD environment - the format, which according to some, would probably make me give up my lifelong devotion to analog sources.
