There's an Upside to Color Blindness?

There's an Upside to Color Blindness?

Researcher Amanda Melin posits that color blindness might be an advantageous adaptation for capuchins hunting camouflaged insects. For us humans? Not so much—"selection pressure for maintaining color vision could have relaxed because it wasn’t a big advantage in the habitat or types of hunting used at the time."

How We Learned to Stop Having Fun

How We Learned to Stop Having Fun

Is depression an epidemic? Barbara Ehrenreich says that the way that depression seemed to sweep across Western Europe in the 17th Century looks like one, but is probably the result of the modern age's celebration of individuality. An increased sense of personal autonomy was accompanied by the loss of communal rituals and festivities that emphasized belonging to communities.

Musical musings

I saw the Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields performing at the CW Post a few days ago. Whereas the acoustics were pretty bad, the live performance never the less sounded unlike any speaker I've heard. It occurred to me just how difficult it must be to faithfully record a live performance. All frequencies by the instruments are produced so effortlessly and no frequencies are exaggerated and no frequencies are attenuated. I wonder if huge microphones are needed to accurately record the nuances and space and all the elements that make music so magical.

Recommendation for integrated/CD for B&W 704 (newbie)

Have been laughed at when I suggested I might use the 704s with my Denon 2807. Have come to terms with the error of my ways, and have budgeted $2K for quality 2 channel integrated/cd combo. Will be set up in a 20x20 room...prefer to listen to Jazz, Rock, Blues, Accoustic Guitar (all genres) and some Classical. The 704s sounded great in the shop with Rotel. Am considering Arcam, NAD, Naim...the usual suspects I suppose. Have read glowing reviews from the UK about Roksan Kandy. Any experience with 704s would be appreciated.
