Many years ago, "despite" being fresh out of college, I landed what at the time was for me my dream job --- being a salesman at the one hifi shop that had long held wonder. I just knew it was my destiny to guide buyers (not shoppers, BUYERS) into better hifi. All they needed was a little help from someone who knew the way.
Anyone want to guess the reality, and why Iverson's "Here's how it works ..." depiction is similarly too naiive?
This is the real formula for getting people to acquire finer sound:

Overall I like this issue. I must say I'm intrigued by 2 ads.
The first is the new stereophile CD; this looks good! However I can't find it on this site yet under e commerce like the ad said. No matter; I can wait. The other ad was for Zenph. Very interesting concept! I may just buy a copy.
The question I have is about the article on Orrin Keepnews.
In it it says that Monk's cabaret card had been revoked.
Exuse my ignorance, but what was(is?) a cabaret card? Is that like a union card? Why was his revoked? I like some Jazz, but know little about it. Thanks for any help!
What musician, from the past or present, would you want to find in the seat next to you on a six-hour plane flight?

pre-ampflication basics. for a beginner with increasing knowledge...
Continuing my thinking around phono preampflication, I am starting to ask myself the question of whether it is worth bringing an upgrade forward and getting a pre-amplifier with a phono stage. Say, instead of the EAR 324 phono stage with a separate integrated amp or preamp/power amp, the EAR 912/509s for example.
But seriously, at this level, are there any advantages in going for a separate phono preamp? or going for a preamp with integrated phono MM/MC inputs?

I just read the Wes Phillips review of the Slim Devices Transporter. Unless I missed something or misread the article, there was no review of it as a digital transport feeding an external DAC. Specifically, I am curious as to how the Tranporter's digital outputs compare with the SB3, and it seems this would have been an ideal opportunity to have done so with the Musical Fidelity X-DACv3. Was such a comparison performed?
