amps on all the time?

Forums

I have returned to separates for two-channel for the first time in a long time and an old question has come up again. That is, since my pre-amp has no switched outlets (and they probably would not be heavy-duty enough anyway), what is the best way to manage turning the power amp off and on. Just leave it on all the time? I'm not against doing that but it seems to generate a lot of heat even when idling. The pre does have 12-Volt triggers, but there is nothing on the power amp to connect them to.

The New York Times is ending its TimesSelect program, which charged subscribers $50/year for access to "premium" content, meaning most of their regular columnists. We're going to hear a lot of piffle about how the Times only had about 250,000 subscribers because the content was so widely pirated, but I think that's horse-hockey.

Newbie needs speaker and sub help

Putting together a home theater system (already purchased the H/K AVR 245) and am looking for some micro speakers that I can mount to my ceiling (can't have flushmount per my hoa). Was looking at the Anthony Gallos as well as the Orb...still all a bit pricey. Looking to spend around 600 for a sub, five speakers and the ceiling mounts. Any other suggestions out there? I am having a helluva time trying to find more speakers that are the same size (and that come in white or stainless--per the wife) as the Gallos and the Orbs. Any insight is MUCH appreciated.

Transport Question

I have recently purchased an old DAC Magic 2 and have integrated it into my system. It has made a marked difference in Redbook CD listening. I am using a Kenwood 323M 200 disc changer along with a Pioneer 563a universal player as transports. I was wondering, obviously there are far better CD players out there, however since I have an outboard DAC to handle the digital conversion, what should I be looking for in an higher quality player.

Receiver choices

I just bought Paradigm 90P`s and also bought Energy Audyssey A5+2`s. Dont know which I will use yet for my fronts. Have a Bic Venturi 15" sub and (at present ) have Bic Venturi Cinema rears and now am ready to buy a receiver. I am leaning towards the Onkyo 805 because of it`s price (900.00 ish) and because it has 130 watts per channel , true HD, 1.3 HDMI , Audessey speaker set-up , and almost all of the regular receiver options . I havent heard about any problems with them yet .Is this a good choice ?

Another slight Denon Dilema

Hello All,just thought I'd pose this question here re: my Denon 2910 DVD player-just recently it has taken to refusing to read certain SACD's-one in particular, Norah jones, I have played many, many times and then all of a sudden about 2 weeks ago it will no longer read when placed in the Denon - yes I have checked for scratches, marks etc and even cleaned the disc repeatedly - Could it possibly be a dirty laser? Any thoughts
Thanks, Michael...
