Korg MR1000 used to archive vinyl

I just received my Korg MR1000 "1-bit Professional Recorder". It's a very compact unit with a full complement of inputs and outputs, battery power (4 hr claimed life, yet to be confirmed), AC converter and gig bag. It's $1200-street from numerous sources. I bought mine from Music123, but most of the sellers offering recording devices have it at the same price. The case is aluminum and attractively finished.

Sun Ra Phones Home?

Sun Ra Phones Home?

The Cassini-Huygens probe has been recording the sounds of Saturn. My cats, who are thoroughly bored by everything audio (other than the gear's heat-generating properties), were quite agitated by these sounds. Good to know, hee hee hee.

DVD: A Reality Check

DVD: A Reality Check

The announcement in October 1995 of the Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) set the hearts of audiophiles and music lovers pounding. Although primarily a digital video and computer-data storage format, DVD's massive capacity could be applied to a "super CD" audio-only disc. Finally we would be liberated from the musical limitations of the CD's 16-bit word length, 44.1kHz sampling rate, and two-channel format. We were tantalized by reports of 96kHz sampling rate, 24-bit word length, and multichannel playback. Digital redemption appeared to be just around the corner.

Floorstanding speaker placement

Should floorstanding speakers only be placed on the floor, or is it ok to place them atop a lowboy cabinet or credenza?

I plan on purchasing the KEF iQ9 floorstanding speakers, and they will be placed in the media niche in my room. My media niche is about 80" wide, 30" deep, and 80" high. I planned on placing the speakers at the ends of the niche. Between the speakers would be a lowboy cabinet or credenza for the components and other storage.
