DIY speaker design and construction

hey all, my name is Luke Richard and i am young eager audiophile enthusiast. Over the past couple years i have been soaking up as much info from the net and various sources as possible regarding audio electronics and loudspeaker design and technology. Recently i have embarked on my own loudspeaker design and construction project using MK drivers from an old pair of S-85 bookshelf speakers.

Point of vanishing returns.

Hola,

We seem to have quite an array of opinions about when a certain component becomes "stupidly overpriced" vs. a "real world value."

As an audiophile, I find that many non-audiophiles find ANY audio expense to be "stupid expensive." So, I know we are in a fringe group just by being here!

You'd think within our hobby, we could at least not have that issue to contend with, but we do!

I'm curious as to what price point, for you, do components cross over from acceptably priced vs. over-priced or "worthy of criticism."

Be the change you want to see in the world

Since people don't seem to be discussing audio anymore, I thought I would post something.

This may be of more interest to those of you who have been following my analog quest (and I wish Jim and Clay were here to see this ), but I will share with everyone. It's cathartic.

Moons ago, I had my heart set on a new Rega P2. It was better than the P1 - not by a huge amount, but the improved construction quality was a tipping point - and the price was right. I was all set to save my pennies for the 2 until...

You guys banned DUP again?

So, its like this. DUP is sort of like Saddam Hussien. Most people that hate DUP is part of the United States. The editors are like leaders of other nations that have to bend under the pressure from the United States. They write speeches about the NSA spying on us because of an editor of a different magazine. DUP is banned because he offends a select few. It is sort of like Guantanimo. He can be banned forever for all we know. We may never see DUP again. He is now officially a Stereophile Combantant. Anything can be done to DUP from this point forward.

Conventional Wisdoms & Recommended Components

Conventional Wisdoms & Recommended Components

Conventional wisdom has it that the perfect sculpture is present, but hidden within the raw material. And the same conventional wisdom similarly applies to magazine editing: all it needs is careful chipping away at the extraneous material in the raw text files we receive from our authors—sometimes the barest degree of reshaping, repointing, and restructuring—and you have a finished product that both maximally communicates the writer's message and makes the anonymous artisan-editor proud of a job well done.

I was once in a sushi bar in Osaka; sitting next to me was a live abalone, stoically awaiting its fate. It stuck its siphon out of its shell, the waiter tapped the tip with a spoon, the siphon withdrew. Again the siphon appeared, again the waiter tapped it with a spoon, again it withdrew.
