Anniversaries, Appreciations, Aleatorics, & an Apology

Anniversaries, Appreciations, Aleatorics, & an Apology

It was the strangest feeling: to be part of something yet without any understanding of how what I was doing fit into the whole. Back in the early 1980s, I had graduated from playing miscellaneous instruments in an early-music ensemble to devoting myself to the recorder (the end-blown fipple flute, not the audio archiving machine). My teacher, Nancy Winkelmann, had introduced me to various ensembles, and one Saturday afternoon, an ad hoc group of us was working with a composer of so-called "aleatoric" music; literally, music by chance.

2-Channel Home Theater Question (Thanks again, guys...)

Thanks to all your previous helpful comments, I think I'm very close to putting together my 1st system (ever) together for the holidays.

So before, I was going to just put together an audio system, but now, I've decided that I want to use the system for a 2-channel home theater as well (home theater is a rather grand term... I live in a tiny 1 br in Manhattan.)

I've settled on Infinity P162 speakers and an Oppo DV 980H player. I already own a Samsung LNT3253 32" LCD. I also have a Squeezebox on the way (thanks mom!)

Friggin' dealers again

A friend of mine is looking for a preamp, so I went to a dealer with him today. He heard some stuff that ultimately left him more confused than when he first started. Alas, that's not the point of my story.

As we were about to leave, I told the dealer that I'm seriously considering buying the Magnepans 3.6R and that I haven't heard anything that would even remotely touch them at this price, but they're not perfect, so perhaps he could recommend something in this price range that would cover the bass better. (This dealer doesn't carry the Magnepans).
