Scientology's only motivation for being labeled a religion is purely for taxation purposes. The government of Germany is trying to ban Scientology because they know better than we do about cults and how dominating and damaging they can become to a democratic society. Whether or not Scientology is a religion is not based on the philosophy of nihilism whereas Scientology believes there is no objective basis to truth. Thus, giving anyone the room to deem them a religion if they so choose.

The Discreet Charm of Paolo Fresu

The Discreet Charm of Paolo Fresu

A few months ago, I reviewed</A> Carla Bley’s wonderful CD, The Lost Chords Find Paolo Fresu, a deceptively Dada title that referred simply to the nature of the session—Bley’s quartet, called the Lost Chords, joined by the Sardinian trumpeter, Paolo Fresu. I praised Fresu’s “appealing” sound, its “clarion tone with a slight huff of breathiness,” but confessed that I’d never heard him before. Now comes a trio album, Mare Nostrum (on the German label, ACT), with Fresu as co-leader—along with the French-Italian accordionist, Richard Galliano, and the Swedish pianist, Jan Lundgen—and, though it’s not as quirkily magical as the Bley, it’s a charmer. There’s at once a twilight intimacy and a panoramic insouciance to this music. Imagine a gentler Nina Rota, as if he’d scored the soundtracks for early Truffaut instead of boisterous Fellini; toss in some Argentine spice (Galliano, who also plays bandoneon, was close to Astor Piazzolla); and you get a sense of the mood. It’s a bit fluffy and sentimental, but in a good, lively way (though there’s also a spirited arrangement of Ravel’s “Ma Mere L’Oye” and a darkly stirring piece, a Fresu composition, inspired by the Turkish poet Nazim Hikmet). The sound quality is quite good, though I wish there’d been less reverb on the trumpet.

Turntable Quest at an End

Well, folks, I thought I'd post an update for those of you who have been following my analog journey from the beginning.

I was honest with my financial situation, and it didn't look like a P3-24 was going to happen anytime in the foreseeable future. There was a used Planar 3 down at the store, and I jumped on it today. When the Sumiko Black Pearl comes in, I'll go audition the table and take it home. I'm pretty excited to have an analog source, happy to be done saving, and pleased to have freed up some capital (since my total deposit was greater than the value of my purchase).

Pioneer Elite DV-58AV -- In the house -- Review to come

Last Saturday my Pioneer Elite DV-58V universal player arrived after receiving full-boat mods from Ric Schultz. You can see Ric's offerings at:
http://www.tweakaudio.com/EVS-2/Pioneer_DV-58AV_mods.html

It's about 100-hours into burn-in, so I'm waiting until next weekend to record in-depth findings. Here's a preview; it blows away the stock Oppo 981HD.

I'll try to get a review out by early next week.

The review then becomes an exciting discovery, reaffirming the pleasure one takes in good audio, and in listening to music being reproduced as it should be. It makes the listening exciting and the writing easier. The Classé Fifteen solid-state stereo amplifier is just such a surprise.
