Friend needs speakers + integrated for less than $1000

I thought of the Onkyo A-9555 (about $490) and Epos ELS3 speakers ($400).

Any other ideas? He is going to use this for movies and some music from a cd player and ipod. He was going to get a Sony 5.1 box system from Circuit City for about $300 and after listening to my system and seeing his options he changed his mind...

On 78 playback

First, I have to praise Art D on his very well written and informative piece on playing 78's and the gear used. That said, a 78rpm record and the gear to play it is a niche in a niche. If I am doing the math right, all the odds and ends he mentioned to give the playback justice runs to at least $10,000. TEN GRAND!

Even to the very well healed that is a lot of change. Especially when one considers one is not doing vinyl, or digital, or even server based digital but simply a small piece of one source.

Best Wishes for the New Year

Best Wishes for the New Year

I'm sitting here in front of the trusty Toshiba 286 laptop on December 31, 1992, stuck with apparently incurable writer's block; in a couple of hours, we will be taking off en famille for the latest of Larry Archibald's legendary New Year's Eve parties. I wish I had something to write about for this month's "As We See It" essay; I wish...I wish...you know, there are a number of things I really wish for right now, yet I don't believe there is a component out there that can give me what I want.
