Aloha,

Last week was CES/T.H.E. Show, and since that offered us a steady stream of audiophiles upon which to perform our evil experiments, we tried a few things.

One thing we tried...

We had a second-room system made up of a Modwright CD/SACD player (made by Dan Wright) and a Ferguson Hill smaller speaker system. The Ferguson Hills are an 'active' system, with the Modwright feeding right into their own 'intergrated' amp for the speakers.

Simplicity.

Musical Fidelity e20 phono question

I have finally put together my setup, a part of my setup is the musical fidelity e20 preamp that I was given. I don't know much about this piece of gear but I'm curious if anyone knows if this preamp has a phono preamp in it or not. My setup is working and when I use other inputs of the e20 it works great. The turntable into the phono inputs however does not. I guess I just assumed that it would have a phono preamp integrated but maybe it doesn't and that is why... I can't think of any other reason...

When I was younger, in my teens and early twenties, it happened all the time. On a whim, I'd go out to a small rock venue, and be absolutely shocked, ignited, <i>devastated</i> by some young, unknown band. Afterwards, I was always too shy to speak to the musicians, but, if I had any extra cash on me, I'd be sure to head to the merch' table and pick up a demo, maybe even buy a button or t-shirt. The feeling was as intoxicating and brilliant as New York City's snow-covered streets on a sunny winter day. This band was now <i>yours</i> to have and to hold, to love and to cherish, from this day forward, or until they signed to a major label.

I was wondering how people within the forums rate DA processors within CD players. For example there is a Marantz CD player that has a Cirrus logic DA convertor and Arcam uses Wolfson wm8740, multi-level delta processor. While I understand hearing is believing are there any other measurements?

At the end of every CES, we struggle to find the underlying themes that bind the show to the industry and the world at large. The overwhelming theme this year was the economy. Attendance was down—the official estimate was 10% off of last year's, but everyone I spoke with snorted in derision at that figure.

I'm still amazed at the sheer number of new high-end CD players announced at this show. Either someone didn't get the memo about the disc format's impending demise, or else we've entered that phase, as with turntables, that playback advances will continue to win new customers with big collections.
