Nels Cline news

So a few months ago I got a call from a guy in Louisville, Kentucky
telling me about this new covers project he was putting together and
asked if I'd contribute a track to benefit Teach for America. The
idea is that our generation of songwriters was "mentored" by those
who came before, and in this spirit we'd cover a track from some of
the greats of the sixties and seventies.

Apple and EMI To Release Limited Edition Stereo USB

I am sure this release has not escaped anyone's attention. The interesting aspect from my perspective was the inclusion of 24-bit 44.1 kHz FLAC files (alongside 320 kbps MP3 versions). Very irritating for those who like me already ordered the stereo boxed set on CD and were intending to rip the discs to FLAC anyway!

Tube amps: Try the 4 ohm output tap for better sound.

Speakers have dips in their impedance plot, some of them severe. These dips can create attenuations at the frequencies they appear at. A tube amplifier's feedback circuit will attempt to compensate for this, but it may degrade overall sound quality. I have found that using the 4-ohm tap will help compensate for impedance dips. This only works if the speakers' nominal impedance is 8 ohms. Power output will increase with a descending seen impedance (unless speakers go below 4 ohms) much like a solid state amplifier.

On Racism

It seems that there are threads here & there in audio forums these days in which I see racist or borderline racist comments bantered about lightly. I saw a thread in our Stereophile forum, forget which thread, where Michigan Frog wrote something involving phrases like Chop Socky, phrases that are really too outdated to be racist than silly, really, but the content and tone were not so light hearted that it really was offensive to an Asian person like me (thanks for pointing that out, ncdrawl, appreciate that.)

Dusty Springfield: I wanted to like her but...

So I picked up a mint Dusty Springfield's Best from waaaay back in the day, thinking it be a nice addition to my growing library of 60's classics records. I've scored a bunch of great early Stones, Beatles, CSN, and a lot of other gems from the local used record store, but this alas was not one.

"Turntable Wars" was the phrase used by Anthony H. To judge from the reaction of the manufacturers at CES to this innocent phraseology, you would have thought that Stereophile had been warmongering, rather than publishing what were actually pretty positive opinions of the products concerned. So enraged was Jacques Riendeau of Oracle, and concerned that the record be put straight, that he insisted on a "right to reply" to AHC's review; as it happened, Ivor Tiefenbrun and Charlie Brennan of Linn (right in photograph, footnote 1), and SOTA's Rodney Herman (center in photo, footnote 2), also wanted to contribute to the debate, so a small crowd of illuminati gathered in Room 417 of the Americana Congress to commit opinions to tape. I held the microphone and clicked the shutter; Larry Archibald (left in photo) was there to lend the proceedings a businesslike air.
