The Recording Angel

The Recording Angel

Back in the last century, I mused in this space about the essential difference between recorded sound and the real thing. I had been walking to dinner with friends when I heard the unmistakable sound of live music coming from a window. But here was the kicker: rather than the instruments being of the audiophile-approved acoustic variety, they were two amplified electric guitars. Their sounds were being reproduced by loudspeakers, yet it was unambiguously obvious that it was not a recording being played through those loudspeakers, but real instruments.

New tweaky-tweaks!

Yesterday I decided to repeat a tweak I applied to my JBL L-96 back in those days (remember?)

In short I added a thin layer of silicone rubber on the inner edge of the woofer. The purpose is to isolate the woofer from the cabinets, so fewer vibrations escape to the cab itself. See the pic below.

The speakers I have today are much smaller than the L-96's, but are somewhat plagued by cabinet vibrations due to a not too solidly built cabinet. Long time ago I added 1

Does any one in the forums have experience with the Spin Clean System LP cleaner?

I would love to hear about comparisons on this good-value product. Mikey did a solid review, but I wanted to hear from others about their experiences on this cleaner.

Are there other means of drying LP's after the cleaning process that readers have found useful? What about other fluids, and are there any caveats to using certain ones? How does it compare, from a cleaning standpoint, to other, more automated products out there? I need something to hold me over until I can purchase a VPI HW-16.5, and this sounds like the ticket!

All tube phono stage for less than 1000USD?

Hi to everybody in the forum, this is my first post. I have a Rega P3-24 turntable with Elys 2 cartridge and a Cayin A-50T integrated amp with EL34 tubes. The Cayin has no phono stage, I am using a Harman Kardon HK3390 receiver as phono stage, but I am not really happy with it. I want a all tube system and phono stage. I have been looking for an all tube phono stage under 1000USD (better for less than 500USD), but have found none.

Meeting Jimi Hendrix

Meeting Jimi Hendrix

A group of people sit along an old, grimy bar, doing things. Watching, waiting, aspiring. Every single one of them, in one way or another. Watches, waits, aspires. One of them&#151the strangest looking one of all&#151is a black dude with hair like the wind through a California Cypress. Eyes like two half moons. With more care and concern than any of the others, he watches. He watches the man on stage, a fellow named Henry Vestine. Henry is playing guitar, bass, and drums all at once, all by himself.
