The Retro-Futuristic World of High-End Audio

The Peachtree Audio MusicBox

In “Old-School Hi-Fi in Search of the New New Thing,” Hal Espen visits the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest and ponders the inherent dilemma of hi-fi.

How can a decidedly old-fashioned hobby move forward in an increasingly newfangled world?

Outside the listening rooms, the story of this year's Rocky Mountain Audio Fest traced the mood-swings and anxieties that buoy and beset the retro-futuristic world of high-end audio.

Trying to match my Grado RS2i's

Forums

I was considering the Dynaudio X12's but was told in another thread that they're at the opposite end of the sonic spectrum from my Grado's (which I assume means rather cool).

I definitely like warm; I returned the Grado SR325i's because they weren't warm enough.

Using a Marantz PM5004, Marantz CD5004, and Pro-Ject Debut III, and the Grado RS2i's.

I'm not too set in stone on budget, maybe around $800-1200.

Thanks Art...

... for leading your Listening column with the excellent overview of the Arkell Museum. I find music and art inspire the same immdeiate/visceral reactions (sweeping emotions, love it or hate it, etc.), and are more intertwined than many of us imagine.

The same applies elsewhere in life. I worked as a freelance illustrator for ad agencies, before taking a 180 degree turn into the computer software field, and found it to be equally creative and illuminating.

Keep up the great work.

The implications for the bartenders and late night coffee shops are enromous....

FDA about to ban alcoholic beverages that contain caffeine.

Will the nanny state still allow bartenders to serve rum and Coke?

Irish Coffee?

Vodka and Red Bull?

Kalhua (at 4.85mg caffeine per 1.5 oz pour?)

How about somebody who is going out after last call and wants a coffee with his chili cheese omelette, but he/she has had a few?

Man, first San Francisco wants to ban Happy meals and cirumcisions, now this.
