boy am I confused!

Hi. I'm new to this forum and comp. audio in general and have some questions. First my system is very modest - Parasound P/HP-830 preamp, Adcom GFA-535 amp, Cambridge Audio S30 speakers on stands, Athena powered sub in very small room of about 8'x10'. I've been using digital files for portable use (ipod) for a few years now and have been using EAC to rip mp3s. The mp3s can be used on just about anything and I liked that. But now I've become interested in the pc-as-a-music-server-thing.

archiving analog to 24/192 digital on dvd

I have a huge open reel collection (thousands of manufacturer's pre-recorded tapes) which includes some highly collectable stuff from the 50s and 60s on half track that was dubbed in real time from master tapes. I don't want to lose these performances to the aging of the tape and would like to dub them to 24 bit 192 kz sampled dvd-As but have not been able to find an appropriate recording device to make this possible.

Home made room tuning that's better than most pro stuff

After spending a fortune on equipment and music my spouse balked at the idea of spending more big bucks on room tunes, etc. So after checking out the various room tuning stuff at the local high end dealers to see what the stuff was and how it was placed, I went to Lowes and bought some cheap cardboard circular forms normally used for concrete in various diameters (dirt cheap!) and then went buy the dollar store to buy various sound absorption materials like sponges and the like.

New guy questions

Hello people, im new to the forum.
Just so we dont get off on the wrong foot here a quick synopsis of how i got here.
I love music and was always fine with low end equipment untill a few years ago when i drunk ordered a pair of Klipsch custom 3 headphones. At first i thought i made a mistake but after i got them and couldnt return them, i grew to realy enjoy them. Fast forward to 2 weeks ago, my headphones got busted and on the same day my dad's early chrismas gift arives in the mail.....a whole new high end yamaha stereo system composed of:

Yamaha RX-A3000
Yamaha NS-C700

Recording of December 2010: Blood/Candy

Having a long career in the temporal world of indie rock, as the Posies have, has its drawbacks. Before I wrote this review, someone sent me a quote about Blood/Candy from the all-powerful world of Internet music criticism, where speed trumps knowledge. "A collection that's thankfully a world away from their largely charmless and invariably dull nineties output for Geffen."

Spectator Sports, Good and Bad

Spectator Sports, Good and Bad

There is something about the performance of music that is in the nature of a spectator sport. By this I do not mean big-arena stagecraft and lights and fireworks and dance routines. I mean the actual making of the music.

To see Eric Johnson's fingers flying over his Fender Stratocaster as he hits "Cliffs of Dover" out of the park one more time is to enjoy something that is every bit as much an athletic performance and a spectator sport as baseball is. There is a thrill to watching people do difficult things exceptionally well, things that most of us can only take random sidelong swipes at.
