September 1979, just after my 13th birthday. We, my parents, my little brother and I, lived in a small village in the middle of nowhere. It was still 1975 there, in looks and music. I was sitting on the floor in front of the TV and then a new music movement called Ska was announced by Adam Curry (later MTV) between all the disco and pop. For three minutes I sat breathless, so to speak but certainly hypnotized, watching the black & white music video Gangsters. I knew right away, this is me! This song, this band and Terry Hall in particular (in music and looks) has defined me. Or rather, by them, him my own (personality) has definitely been formed, escaped and has come to the surface. I immediately had my hair, beautiful medium-long curls, millimetered and via via I got an old postman suit (postmen still wore suits back then, of course I removed all logos), nice white shirt and suspenders underneath and for me way to expensive black leather Dr. Martens shoes with a thick sole underneath. In the village I was laughed at by Deep Purple listening teenagers in their way too tight jeans, but I felt good, I felt (finally) me. For two years I actually only listened to this LP, okay I also had LPs from The Police, for example, but still. Until a new friend borrowed me his lp "17 Seconds" and I went next level in my personal music development, but that's another story. While in the early and mid eighties my friends had Ian Curtis or Robert Smith as (style icon as) example, for me it was Terry Hall. Also during the Fun Boy Three period. Although I'm still reasonably along and try not getting stuck in the late seventies and eighties (I listen to Billie Eilish, Dua Saleh, Sault etc a lot these days) I still play music from that period (The Specials, The Cure, New Order etc ) and brands like Vivienne Westwood or Fred Perry, but the British "look" and brands in general (JW Anderson, Church's shoes etc) remain my favorite here in the flat land of the Van Gogh's potato eaters. Btw completely in style I closed 2022 by playing Gangsters and Nite Klub as the last two songs of the year. And last year I had a retro Blitz! (New Romance) party but the dance floor was busiest when I played the live versions of Gangsters and To Much To Young.
