Joseph Audio's Jeff Joseph teamed with Nick Doshi to present another fantastic‑sounding room at High End Munich.
The system included a Funk Firm Saffire turntable ($9800; all prices approximate when converted from euros) fitted with a Funk Firm FZ tonearm ($6800) and an Audio‑Technica VM760SLC dual‑MM cartridge ($800).
Korea's SOtM—Soul Of the Music—offers a range of digital equipment, and in this system it was abundant. SOtM gear included an sMS‑200 network streamer/server (€9100), an sMS‑1000SQ music server ($6000), an sDP‑1000EX D/A converter‑preamplifier ($4600), a tX‑USBultra digital hub/regenerator ($1100), an sCLK‑OCX10 master‑clock generator ($3900), and an sNH‑10G network switch ($1850).
SOtM also addresses every facet of noise reduction, power treatment, and connections. In Munich its offerings included an sPS‑500 power supply ($800), dCBL UF C and UF CP USB cables ($900 and $960, respectively), a dCBL BNC50 BNC cable ($960), ISO‑CAT6 and CAT7 filters ($390 and €480), a dCBL CAT7u network cable ($900), a dCBL CAT8M Ethernet cable ($1580), a pCBL SS8F power cable (€1200), and an MT‑1000 power strip ($1560). Cardas Audio Clear Beyond and Clear cables (various prices) and Pagode Signature racks (€5500/ea.) rounded out the setup.
Analog signals fed either a Funk Firm Akutrak ($2100) or a Doshi Audio Evolution phono stage ($29,950). Digital and analog signals then ran to a Doshi Audio Evolution line stage ($32,950) driving a Doshi Evolution stereo amplifier ($36,500), which in turn powered Joseph Audio Pearl Graphene Ultra loudspeakers ($52,000/pair).
Joseph's streaming‑music selections nicely showcased the system's strengths. Paul Chambers's Bass on Top sounded not only full and rich, as expected from a Tone Poet release, but also remarkably clear and coherent. Sandbox Percussion's "Pillar VII," from Andy Akiho's Seven Pillars, highlighted the system's exceptional imaging, with drums and cymbals spread across a very wide soundstage. This system was dead quiet, dynamic, and powerfully visceral—or, as we say in North Carolina, "kicking ass and taking names."
