Do you lend discs out to your pals?

Some of us find ourselves turning into music lending libraries; the rest of us keep our discs under lock and key. Can your pals borrow your discs?

CDs, gernerally yes, vinyl, generally no. Of course there are exceptions for someone I regard to be exceptionally careful or careless.

I swear, I'm the only person on the planet that can keep a CD from getting scratched.

I have loaned my CDs to my girlfriend and a few of the people with whom I work; I am willing to loan them to others as well. In doing so, I may turn a few of them on to this hobby. I don't get any requests to borrow my LPs, since few people have turntables these days.

I never lend books, LPs, CDs, DVDs.... I lost a copy of CCR's Greatest Hits in the late 70s, and a copy of "Heart of Darkness" in the 80s.

There are only a select few that I lend any of my discs to. The rest know not to even ask.

I treat my CDs collection like they are diamonds. You can enjoy them but don't take them out.

My CDs sometimes can be borrowed by good friends; LPs are kept under lock and key. It isn't a big problem, because most of my friends don't have a turntable anymore.

Yes, but only to people who I trust to take care of them. And that ain't many...

Sure, it's one way to begin to exchange information and thereby, opening the door to discuss sound quality too.

I try not to for reasons of damage or loss. Occassionally I'll ask for music because I have no idea where they find music I like.

Go for it :)

There are those you trust and those you don't. Lending is not equal opportunity.

I don't lend out CDs period. Many of them are out of print and I'm not willing to risk any mishaps. Not to mention the whole getting-them-back-in-the-condition-they-were-lent thing.

I would never lend an original, I'm just too fanatical about care and cleaning. I am willing to lend out copies that I have made for my use in my car.

I'll loan CD's out for a week. But I NEVER let my LP's out of my sight!

A long time ago I stopped loaning LPs. Having them back scratched irritates me more than not having them back at all.

Yes, and my copy of Some Girls is still missing! But it's a small price to pay, because it's no fun if you can't share.

No one asks!

i exchange discs with friends who have comparable playback systems.

I would only loan my disks to my brother until he misplaced a couple of them. Now it's hands off for the masses.

i love music and i know i would be near deaf some day , but what can i say, i love to feel music at high presure levels. ;)

The guys I live with have an MP3 server, to which they rip all the CDs they want to hear on any regular basis. When it comes to hard copies of the music, I prefer to keep those under lock and key.

All the time, but only to friends I know will return them in the same condition I gave it to them.

Dan Landen's picture

Usually I don't lend them out because sometimes they don't come back! That's what makes me leery about lending from my collection.

beken's picture

I lend them out to some friends who are in process of either upgrading something in their systems are looking for some music they may end up buying because they are expanding their interest in different music. I lend them my personal copy of the physical CD (I do NOT lend anybody my LPs). So the RIAA can rest easy.

Only the friends who respect my property ever get to borrow from me again. Those who do, have free reign to borrow what they like.

Mike Collette's picture

I do lend disks, but I try to keep it on a reciprocal basis; I will lend you such and such discs if you will lend me this and that discs. That keeps the discs from "being lost".

Aakash Bhasin's picture

Most forget to return them and scratch the covers or worse the CDs

macksman's picture

I lend cd's only and give cassettes away. Vinyl? NEVER!

Brankin's picture

Too many discs have not found their way back home. I will tape or burn a CD, if they provide the materials. Needless to say, I have never taped or burned a CD since implementing this policy. Hmmm, maybe I need new friends?
