I enjoyed the Magico room. I visited for long stints on two days. I also visited the Hanson/Magico room with the S3 on exhibit.
A pleasant surprise in this room, and in the Wilson Audio/Doshi and Joseph Audio (speakers) room, was the return to active duty of the reel-to-reel tape. There was more reel-to-reel at this show than I had ever seen before.
Along with the reel-to-reel were some honest-to-goodness "from the archives" and "master" tapes on display for the Axpona attendee this year. For those of us who were not of the reel-to-reel era, the sound quality of this medium was surprisingly good for this attendee.
This show has gotten bigger and better each year. I also noticed more manufacturers' owners at this show than ever before; they have noted the growing importance of this show. This would have been a great show for Bowers and Wilkins to do a Midwestern debut of their 800 series. B&W's continued absence from this show as a featured product has been a mystery to me; they have major dealers in the Chicago area. Perhaps they will hear of the growing clout of this event and show their wares next year.
As a side note--and my only observation of concern about the show--is that only rooms with sane volume levels got long visits from me. This room was one of not too many that took the correct measure of the room, the music, the equipment, and set the volume accordingly. I bypassed rooms where winning the volume-knob "arms race" was the order of the day.
