And the So-Called Homeland Security Department Does Nothing!
There's a hops shortage!
And You Thought Grateful Dead Concerts Were Long
World's longest concert sounds second chord after one-and-a-half years. It's A, C, and F#—gonna take a while to resolve that one.
And You Thought the Audio Glossary Was Strange
Meet the Schmidt Sting Pain Index. Example: Being stung by a Bullhorn acacia ant is "a rare, piercing, elevated sort of pain. Someone has fired a staple into your cheek."
Andrew Hill, R.I.P.
I was saddened to learn of Andrew Hill's death this weekend. Ever since I discovered his intensely original music, his recordings have been touchstones for me, including the brilliant Passing Ships, a record that was actually held back by Blue Note for 35 years as "unreleasable."
Andrew Imbrie: 1921–2007
Stockhausen's death garnered all the attention, but I'd be remiss if I didn't note the passing of Andrew Imbrie on December 5.
Andy Ward's Classic Album Tributes
I like Andy Ward's illustration style, especially some of these recreations of classic album covers. Of course, in his "Fantasy League Allstars 1," he does have Hendrix playing guitar right-handed, but maybe in his fantasy Jimi plays rightside up.
Anechoic Chamber
Fewer loudspeaker companies have anechoic chambers than you realize. They take up an awful lot of space, for one thing. Focal has one, and it has a twist—rather than have a suspended floor, the company puts its speakers on a hydraulic jack and suspends it 30' above the floor. This makes getting massive speakers into and out of the chamber a lot easier and safer.
Anechoic Chamber
YGA gets its open air measurements by lifting the speaker under measurement away from that pesky floor boundary with a forklift.
Animated Knots
It's knots! With animation!
Anna Netrebko
Who can resist an article that begins like this? "The sniffles of a diva are like the tantrums of La Nina: a tropical depression in the Pacific is ready, by the time it gets to the North Atlantic, to produce lightning bolts, pelting hail and a deluge of biblical ferocity."
