The Sound That Shouldn't Be
Interesting articlehttp://www.NoiseAddicts.com/2008/07/the-sound-that-shouldnt-be/">articl…; on subharmonics. There are links to recorded examples, which are certainly interesting, but for me, the money quote is: "She demonstrated her ability to top scientists in the US, but they gave up trying tofind out howthe effect happens."
The Specter Haunting Pop Music
Sasha Frere-Jones has a fascinating articlehttp://www.newyorker.com/arts/critics/musical/2008/06/09/080609crmu_mus…; in the June 9 The New Yorker about Antares's Auto-Tune software. In case you aren't familiar with it, Auto-Tune is pitch correction software that is used almost universally in contemporary pop recordings—sometimes just to "fix" an off note, increasingly frequently as an effect in its own right.
The Strange Case of George Trow
Here's a good example of why it is sometimes better to only know a writer through his writing.

The Sultan's Elephant
Again from Jeff Wong—he's such a nice boy, I may take the day off and let him guest blog. This video clip shows the girl giant waking up, taking a shower from the sultan's elephant, and wandering off in St. James Park to play. It's from a site specific art work by Royal de Luxe (story herehttp://www.thesultanselephant.com/">here;) and I think it's magical. The girl giant's face is wonderfully expressive.
The Sultan's Elephant on the Road
I (well, Jeff Wong) linked to The Sultan's Elephant on Monday. Well, it turns out that it will be enacted in other cities throughout the summer. It will be in Antwerp, Belgium from July 6–9 and in Calais toward the end of September. Le Havre gets it in late October.

The Time Fountain
My buddy Jeff Wong sent this little video along and I initially resisted posting it, primarily because I used to work in a light show that featured strobe light effects (ah, the '60s, I'm told I enjoyed them). We used to create lots of chaos with unsynchronized strobes moving in different planes, so I was blasé about The Time Fountain's reversing time schtick.

I've read 'em all—does that make me the King of the Geeks? (And shouldn't Cryptonomicon be in first place?)
