Dear Vinyl Lovers,
I assume you’ve been in a situation like this before, too.
Death to the Loudness Wars?
Photo: The Quietus
Over at The Quietus, Nick Southall speaks with mastering engineer Bob Katz about how iTunes Radio may soon put an end to The Loudness Wars. I direct your attention to the article partly because it's a good read and partly because, in hi-fi circles, we tend to think that young people don't care enough about sound quality; this article is a small bit of proof that there are in fact young people who know how to listen. Nick Southall, clearly as obsessed with music and sound as anyone, is two years younger than me. (And, in hi-fi years, I'm a child.)
Here's an especially good bit from Southall's article, Bob Katz speaking:Decisiones
Dad,
It's difficult for me to think of good times with you, but something that does come to mind is how you'd translate those wonderful Ruben Blades songs for me, word for word.

Deck's Like the Wind
Perhaps impatience is my fatal flaw, the thing that keeps me forever this close to complete and undying happiness, but never quite there. I’m impatient. About certain things. I’m impatient, for instance, about acquiring a cassette deck. My cassette collection is growing large. My colorful">http://blog.stereophile.com/stephenmejias/cassettes_and_vinyl/">colorful cassettes sit on my little footstool, waiting to be played, looking at me like what the hell. What the hell?
Dedicated to Vinyl
At some point, I hope to post a long list of links (A Long List of Links) to sites that specialize in vinyl LPs. This will be for you, dear readers. But also for me! I have been collecting the web addresses and adding them to a Favorites folder. If you know of some sites that offer great selections of LPs (new or used) and you want to help me go deeper into debt (just kidding, Clifton), please do share! Together we will build a database of all the World Wide Web's most alluring online stores. (Not those kinds of stores! LP stores, you naughty naughties.)
Deep Listening
I am thinking of going to thishttp://www.stereophile.com/news/120308deep/">this; on Saturday. I wonder if there are any good record">http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=record+stores+near+247… shops in the area.
Deep Listening: The Video
Well, I wasn't able to attend Saturday's "Deep Listening" discussion at the Philoctetes Center. A plane to Mexico was missed and I wound up drinking exotic beers and helping newlyweds plan their honeymoon. Long story.
Deluxe Edition
I think it was the only album my parents owned on both cassette and vinyl. So they could listen at home, and in the car. I remember looking at it and thinking I don't know what. This young black man in a gleaming white suit with a look on his face that says what. Looking all confident and comfortable and strange.
Demagnetizing!
The controversialhttp://forum.stereophile.com/forum/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=53228&an=0…; Furutech deMag provided an obvious and immediate improvement to a new vinyl LP.
Departures
We flew cover photographer Eric Swanson to Salt Lake City to shoot the impressive Wilson MAXX 3 loudspeaker. His flight was delayed, of course.
