Adding Wireless into the Audio BREW

Please bear with us a moment here—we know most audiophiles react to MP3-related news with a serious case of ringing ears, but tracing where the lo-fi market is currently headed can be instructive for understanding the distant hi-fi future. And if the new technology previewed last week at Qualcomm's">http://www.qualcomm.com/brew/">Qualcomm's BREW conference in San Diego is any indication, some parts of your audio future may, in fact, be wireless.

Advanced Audio 20th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, November 11

As we reported">http://stereophile.com/news/101606advanced/">reported previously, on Saturday, November 11, retailer Advanced Audio will celebrate its 20th anniversary with "an open format seminar" at the Sheraton Tacoma Hotel (1320 Broadway Plaza, Tacoma, WA 98402. Tel: (253) 572-3200). Seminar participants will include Richard Vandersteen of Vandersteen Audio; Steve Silberman, Ayre Acoustics's national sales manager; Joe Harley, renowned recording producer and AudioQuest vice-president; Shane Buettner, technical editor of Ultimate AV; and Wes Phillips, a senior editor at Stereophile.

AES Convention Postponed

As a result of the terrorist attacks last week, the Audio Engineering Society (AES) has decided to postpone its AES 111th Convention until November 30. The annual audio event, which was to have been held this week in Manhattan at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, will now be held Friday, November 30–Monday, December 3, 2001. The AES says that the convention will use the same exhibit, demo, and conference space as would have been used next week.

AES Rolls into SF, Rocks Convention Center

Saturday, September 26, thousands of enthusiastic audio-savvy attendees began swarming through the massive cavern of the Moscone Center's North Hall in San Francisco. They will continue to swarm until late Tuesday, September 29, the last day of the 105th Audio">http://www.aes.org/">Audio Engineering Society Convention. The convention has attracted hundreds of companies whose products are extravagantly displayed in the huge space beneath the Yerba Buena Gardens. Demonstrations of new products and technologies also take place in smaller rooms off the main floor. Research papers are being presented in meetings throughout the four-day event.

After Long Absence, Threshold Will Return to CES

After three years in limbo, Threshold will make an official return to the audio market at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show. The new company's initial emphasis will be on professional equipment with crossover appeal for audiophiles, according to Threshold's former national sales manager Chris English, a principal in the new venture. A name for the new company has yet to be decided.

Ahmet Ertegun: 1923–2006

Ahmet Ertegun, the Turkish immigrant who founded Atlantic Records in 1947 with Herb Abramson and turned it into one of the most influential labels in the world with his older brother Nesuhi, has died at the age of 83. An Atlantic Records spokesman said his death was the result of a brain injury sustained in a fall backstage at a Rolling Stones concert on October 29.

Ailing Carver Gets Transfusion, Will Try Direct Sales

On Tuesday, May 5, beleaguered Carverhttp://www.carver.com">Carver; announced that it had received a financial transfusion of almost $400,000 and that it would make a move into direct marketing in an attempt to bolster flagging sales. The Woodinville, Washingon-based company announced in a press release that it "had closed a sale of 3,000,000 shares of restricted Common Stock of the Company to one of its preferred shareholders, Renwick Special Situations Fund, L.P., for $375,000, or $0.125 per share."

AIX Announces Multi-perspective DVD-A Discs

One of the more interesting displays at Home Entertainment 2001 was a small booth belonging to West Hollywood, CA–based AIX">http://www.aix.com/new">AIX Media Group, which was manned by company president Mark Waldrep. At the show, Waldrep discussed">http://www.stereophile.com/news/11035/">discussed his work in creating DVD-Audio recordings with multiple perspectives, selectable by the listener via remote control.
