Not much to say here. Introducing the Horn Monos into my system was completely straightforward, the…

Compared with the immaculate-looking Hovland Sapphire and Music Reference RM-200 tube amplifiers that preceded it on my test bench, the Quicksilver Horn Mono amplifier, with its three tubes atop its chromed chassis, looked unprepossessing. But you should never go by looks; it's performance that matters, right?
The input impedance at 1kHz was usefully high, at 98k ohms, and the amplifier preserved absolute polarity. No surprises there. However, the voltage gain into 8 ohms measured a very low 8.86dB from the 8 ohm output transformer tap. It was an even…

"This really rocks!" John Atkinson commented as he handed me ¡Jácaras! during our search for January's "Recording of the Month." A strange accolade, you might think, for a recording of 18th-century music for baroque guitar, harp, and psaltery, but an apt one. This music does rock. It is,…
Instead, he sent along the $1800/pair Minima FM-2, the Amator's baby brother. These 13-lb minimonitors are the company's smallest model. Of all the Sonus Faber speakers, John predicted that the tiny Minimas would…
The Minimas passed all my usual subjective listening tests with flying colors. I played pink noise to determine the optimal listening axis. Midband colorations were not evident, and the sound was natural over a wide listening area. This was confirmed by the sit-down, stand-up, walk-around test. The sound remained uniform, changing character only when I was standing right above the speaker. I broke the Minimas in over three months, but even over this long a time I heard little change in sonic character.
I set up the Sonus Fabers at the narrow end of the room, 4' from each side…
