The DA-10's unique ability to accept different DACs made measuring it more interesting and challenging. On one hand, it took nearly three times longer to measure. On the other, it was possible to look at the performance of different DACs with the same input receiver, filter, and output stage. Because presenting all the measurements on each DAC would consume too much space, I'll show the measurements with the AD1862 (the DAC most likely to be installed in the DA-10), and comment on the performance of the other DAC cards when of interest.

Tom Jung of DMP (Digital Music Products) is known as one of digital's early adopters. He's also an outspoken proponent of Sony's Super Audio CD over DVD-Audio. As I was intending to review Sony's first SACD player, the SCD-1, I invited Tom to Kathleen's and my Manhattan loft to investigate further. Scull: Now that you're using DSD for your recording, I assume you have to downconvert that master in order to produce a CD?

Jung: Right. We used Sony SBM Direct on a couple of projects, and on the last one I came up with my own way of doing it. There's a 24-bit PCM output in DSD systems, so you can bring that 24-bit signal into any of the current PCM studio tools.

The biggest difference between top-shelf and more affordable phono stages is that the best speak with a quiet, measured specificity that makes even budget cartridges sound good, reproducing recorded energy as well as sound.
