Alright, back in action. Montreal was a blast. Seriously the most fun I've ever had at a hi-fi show. This was due partly to the fact that we didn't have to adjust to a different time zone, partly to the overall laidback, friendly atmosphere, and partly to the smaller, less demanding size of the show. And I didn't even get sick!
I was thrilled to see the emphasis on smaller, less expensive components and systems. True high end sound does not have to be tied to monstrous, mega-priced loudspeakers and backbreaking amplifiers. At Salon Son & Image, I saw great gateways into…
There wasn't space in the May issue of Stereophile for all these photos of the gorgeous and very talented Eliane Elias so here are a few more to ogle. And while you do, I know you'll all be doing it because you respect her as an artist. Seriously though, her new record Bossa Nova Stories is wonderful.
Not the least astonishing moment of President Barack Obama’s recent trip to Europe (and for my more serious thoughts on that diplomatic voyage, click here) was when Michelle Obama met Carla Bruni and appeared her peer in every way, not at all outclassed. Ms. Bruni, of course, is the Italian-born French model and chanteuse who last year married French President Nicolas Sarkozy and, soon after, dazzled, nay seduced, every world leader she met at diplomatic soires. Mrs. Obama’s one-upmanship in London in no way shoves Ms. Bruni aside—the pairing marked, more, the reemergence of a French-…
I stayed up late last on April 2—late for me, anyway: 11pm. I watched the last episode of ER in real time. (Hang in there, peeps, there will be an audio point after the jump.)
I'm not going to defend my ER habit. I know the show wasn't remotely realistic, having worked in an ER myself (albeit long enough ago that the nurses still wore caps). People running around screaming "Stat!" doesn't happen so much. The ER is mostly an endless slog through folks with no primary care physician who come in when they have no other option—although the Friday and Saturday night "knife and gun club" hours…
So, just when I start getting used to my white P3-24, Rega goes and introduces three new high-gloss finishes: Orange, Blue, and Pink. Can you believe it? I feel kinda ripped-off. Had I known, I might've gone with Orange. I might've gone with Blue. I might've gone with Orange and blue. (Let's go Mets.) Hell, I'm in touch with my feminine side and secure in my masculinity; I might've gone with pink.
I may not have had the options, but you do.
The new high-gloss Rega P3-24 turntable costs $1295 and includes Rega's TT-PSU power supply for improved speed stability and…
I was very impressed by the hi-fi dealers I encountered while at the 2009 Salon Son & Image show in Montreal. Representatives from Son-Or-Filtronique, Audio Basics, and Coup de Foudre seemed intelligent, enthusiastic, friendly, energetic, and cool: All qualities the high-end audio industry could use more of.
I've been meaning to become more familiar with New York City's hi-fi dealers. I'll take steps in that direction starting on Wednesday, April 29th, when Stereo Exchange holds their "Manufacturer's Evening."
Wednesday, April 29, 4-7pm: Stereo Exchange (627…
Remember that crush I had on Bat For Lashes' Natasha Khan?
Still got it.
Back in August, I wrote:
Natasha Khan's Bat For Lashes spent much of this summer on tour with Radiohead, and their debut album, Fur and Gold, was nominated for 2007's Mercury Prize. Fur and Gold is not available on vinyl. (Which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to me because I am positive that my Natasha would love vinyl.)
The band is now working on their follow-up. I hope it'll be on vinyl.
Well, I have since pre-ordered the vinyl release of Fur and Gold (months ago…
At Salon Son & Image, I had my ears opened to the differences cables can make when Nordost's Bruno de Lorimier demonstrated several of the company's interconnects, from the popular Blue Heaven ($230/1m pair) to the hallowed Valhalla ($5000/1m pair). I wrote:
The change from Blue Heaven to Red Dawn resulted in subtle differences in volume (increased) and transient response (faster). Moving from Red Dawn to Heimdall, I noted a much more obvious change: Bass impact and quality were improved, percussive speed was again increased, and the sound was more immediate overall.…
During our visit to Michael Fremer's house, alongside all the LPs and cables and enormous amplifiers, I found myself thinking: If only others could experience this, here, like this, they'd understand what all the fuss is about...
Well, guess what.
Gizmodo's John Mahoney got the chance. And he loved it.
The initial response:
I hear the needle drop on Air's "Run" from Talkie Walkie. It's a song I've never heard, but one that I'm now listening to all the time. Because, with all honesty, I have never heard anything like that song played on that stereo…
New York City's Matador Records rewards hardcore music lovers and promotes the growth of the music industry with their intelligent "Buy Early Get Now" plan. With BEGN, fans can pre-order upcoming albums through participating trustworthy retailers across the nation. In addition to the actual album, BEGN packages include exclusive bonuses such as MP3s, posters, band merchandise, and, a free, legal stream of the entire album weeks before the official release date. I like it.
I complain all the time about my pre-orders never arriving. Matador's plan helps to erase the…
