Tube Supplies Under Siege

Tube Supplies Under Siege

It may read like a page out of a classic corporate crime thriller, but the threat is real. ExpoPul, a company whose factory in Saratov, Russia manufactures vacuum tubes under the brand names Sovtek, Electro-Harmonix, Tungsol, Svetlana, Mullard, and others—tubes that include the 6H30 "super tube"—is threatened by one of the many Russian corporate "raiders" who are increasingly stealing businesses from their rightful owners. If the threatened hostile takeover proves successful, two-thirds of the world's supply of vacuum tubes—tubes vital to the sound of audiophile gear and instruments from such well-known companies as McIntosh, Audio Research, BAT, Jadis, Fender, KORG, Peavey, Vox, Soldano, Carvin, Ampeg, and Crane—could become a thing of the past.

Where to fill Jazz 1800 speaker stands

Does the sand and/or lead shot go into the base piece or the legs for this model stand? I'm getting the speakers positioned right now, so I have a little time to wait for an answer. The base and top pieces seem logical since there are removable caps, where the legs only have a threaded screw hole on each end.

After a number of years of equipment reviewing, one gets rather blasé about "compact" loudspeakers. The appearance of yet another one that looks like hundreds of others and embodies no radically new innovations to pique one's curiosity is likely to be greeted with a passionate Ho-Hum.

Already confirmed performers include Ian Hunter, Yo La Tengo, Nils Lofgren, Garland Jeffreys, and Robert Plant who promises a set of Led Zep favorites. Information at (212) 307-7171 or www.thelovesociety.com (although as of this post the web site was "temporarily unavailable").

I can't understand why they do it!

Success in the high end audio market, it seems to me, results from specialization - offering a product that results from doing what you do very well. Consumers of high end equipment very rarely put together systems of components from a single manufacturer. Why then, do you suppose, that Musical Fidelity and Marantz, both noted for their electronics, have decided they need to get into the turntable business.

Musical Fidelity power supply

After reading many positive posts on the benefits of the MF X-10v3 tube buffer I went & ordered one from Music Direct. They have a 30 day return policy. I'm having a hard time really noticing any difference in CD playback. Hence the question about the power supply. Is it also worth a try & does it really make a difference in the perfoprmance of the X-10v3 ? My system consists of nothing ultra expensive but to my ears sounds incredible.
