Britten's Children

Britten's Children

Here's a fascinating review of John Bridcut's Britten's Children, a book that traces Benjamin Britten's fascination with a succession of young boys and that obsession's role in the creation of so much of his glorious music.

How to make your own headphones. They may not be an audio upgrade from the ubiquitous three-buck upchuck earbuds available from your friendly flight attendant, but I love this guy's roll-your-own attitude.

Dup,i allways wondered if that thing really worked.

Hi Dup

Back then, when i was searching for new speakers and Legacy Audio Whispers were a major candidate, they used to have a device which i believe they still do (forget the name) that you connect to a pair of speakers (actlually that device was supposed to be used primarily with the Whispers) and it was supposed to change the "Q" factor.Did you get the chance to listen to it ?

Does your system sound the same all the time, or does it sound better at some times than others?

Reader Mike Agee says that at one time his system exhibited a "moodiness" where the sound would vary from day to day. Does your system sound the same all the time, or does it sound better at some times than others?

Falling asleep during listening sessions...

Here's a strange question: does anyone else have the habit of falling asleep during listening sessions? I'm not talking about "listening fatigue" here but more like being in such a relaxed state and being so into the music that you fall into a sort of trance and then asleep. I do this all the time and it doesn't seem to matter what genre of music is playing. The other day I fell asleep half way through Cecil Taylor's "Conquistador" CD! If you can sleep through that....It's not that I was bored with the music but just so into it that all other thoughts melted away.

How loud do you listen?

After hearing from Jeff how loud DUP plays his system I had a thought. I dug out my trusty Rat Shack meter and took some readings at random times yesterday while I was playing music. I found that most of the levels were in the high 80's(87 or so)db wise. There were a very few selections that I did play louder with peaks around 95-96 db. How loud do the rest of you listen? I used C weighting with slow response.
