When did CDs start sounding good?

I have certain modern cds in my collection that convince me the format itself is really quite capable of delivering good sound. My question is: at what point did this occur? I own a modern cd/sacd player that I believe portrays good sound, but lately I've thrown a few cds in it that sounded like utter filth due to poor ADCs. These disks were: Bruce Springsteen Born to Run circa 1978 and Nirvana Nevermind circa 1991.

WTF?

WTF?

Now forget all the bad press, lackluster reviews, and general public indifference. Doesn't this make you want to buy a Zune?

Transparent Audio Music Wave

Forums

I just ordered me some Transparent Musicwave cables. I got a pair for $175 (used). Now there are very few reviews on these. I am using it to drive my B&W N804. Right now, Im using Monster Cable Z-series (its the one that's white and flexible/rubbery).

Now should I sell the Transparent and get something else or keep them? Right now, Im lacking bass and need more soundstage. Is Cardas or Kimbers a step down?

Speaker decision

Forums

I'm attempting to build my father a decent system on a tiny budget by buying him new components as gifts throughout the year. I started with an MMF turntable last xmas(he has a huge cd collection, but an absolutely massive vinyl collection). This is the only good component he has in his system as of now. This year, I'm planning on speakers, but can't decide between the Epos ELS-3, the B&W DM303, the Polk RTi4, or maybe a used B&W 600 series or something similar from eBay.
