Hi folks,
After a few years of hard work, saving and doing without, the time is nearing when I can get rid of my old Aiwa system and get some nice stuf. I've discovered ebay and have been eyeing some audio components.
I want a system that sounds great for music as well as having all the surround sound stuff for movies.
Continuing the talk of the problems with over-compression of recorded music, I came across this article:

I just purchased Suzanne Vega's Beauty & Crime. I almost lost my hearing when it started up with my amp at its normal volume level! I can't even listen to it all the way through in one siting without getting fatigued. Same with Carly Simon's Moonlight Serenade. Good music, but ruined by the engineer. Geeez, when will this stop?

Only about 8 days till the return of DUP.
Should we have a celebration?
I hope, DUP, you come back in all your former glory. Don't let teh ban subdue you.
I miss those snake oil alerts and I almost had to buy some AVA gear just to remind me you still exist:-)
Please continue to PO those sensitive souls who who so vociferously complained about you, it is their problem, not your's.
Teh forum has been decidedly more boring in your abscence.
I almost bought some expensive cable without your constant reminders of the waste that entails.
Wasn't sure if this was an "Analog" or "Rock" forum thing, but...
Mobile Fidelity is going to release a re-master of Little Feat's first LP.
I never thought the sound quality was all that with the original, so I'm wondering how the Mo Fi re-issues will sound.
To keep this more in the "Analog" realm...
Anybody know what turntable/arm/cartridge they are using to evaluate their pressings?
I've gotten lots of good advice re. my Spica TC-50s. I moved into my modest new house a year ago. The layout of my living room doesn't permit me to center the equipment between the speakers and my Kimber speaker cable is about 3 feet short of one speaker now that my equipment is offset from the speakers.
Here's the question:
Do you recommend a long run of ICs from the pre-amp to the amp, with a short run between the speakers, or do you recommend a longer run of speaker cable and just leave my amp connected to my pre-amp via my 1 meter pair of Kimber PBJs?
I'm in the process of finding the right set of speakers for me in the <$3000 area. In doing this, I've found a literally enormous set of reviews containing verbiage such as "these speakers are fantastic, except for lovers of electronica or rap music," and "hip hop lovers should look elsewhere."
I understand that electronica isn't the preferred material of many audiophiles. And I understand that from a content perspective, hip hop is very polarizing, and that there are a great number of very poorly recorded/produced hip hop albums.
