Dolby TrueHD Ready for Primetime

Recently we received an SOS from fearless leader John Atkinson. Dolby is staging a press event on an evening I have a schedule conflict, he wrote. Could you attend in my stead? As obligations go, attending an industry dinner is not exactly the most onerous task going—alcohol is frequently served (the best way to guarantee the press shows up) and you get to hang out with your fellow A/V journalists, an admittedly mixed blessing. What is not assured is that there will actually be news.

10 year Upgrade fever?

Ten years ago...
Sonic Frontiers Power 2 power amplifier
Robert J. Reina, May, 1997
...and I bought this great amp, upgraded the tubes to KT88 two years ago and still very, very happy but...
Yes the upgrade anxiety has struck again!
So I was drooling as I looked at the McIntosh MC275, after having replaced my old C-22 Commemorative pre-amp with their latest C2200!

But I do have my doubts, MC275 vs. Power2 is that really a worthy upgrade?

World's finast? How can that be?

Zanden claims the DAC with an obsolete chip and vacuum tubes is the world's finast!!! YET, EMMLABS has a CD/SACD player unit that upsamples CD to over 5MgHz which is 2X the SACD rate. And done with up to date IC's. AND it is like 1/4 the price. And it plays SACD, while the obsolete Zanden is a mere CD only. When do claims of "worlds finast" become a lie? What does that make teh EMMLABS unit, which is a modern, up to date system. Only in audio does an obsolete not in production make claims as the finast?

Recommendations for floor-standing speakers needed.

Hi. I'm in the market for a pair of somewhat high quality floor standing speakers but I'm not sure whats best for my money. I'm looking for a really crisp sound. Power but not overkill. Something that sounds exceptional even at the lower volumes. I wouldnt wanna pay too much more than 500 bucks for the pair. Also, I went to Best Buy to test drive some floor standing speakers by Klipsch. I'd never heard of this company before. Are they a good brand to consider as well?

Thanks.

What it is we do when we do that thing we do.

More often than not, I agree with Wes Phillips' point of view. As an example, I accept that Stephen has summed things up about as well as one can with his, "Listening to music. On the hi-fi."

Based on what appears in this forum, however, I have to part company with Wes when he says of those who participate in our hobby (As We See It - August), "We like being exclusive. We like being disputative. We just loves our arguments."

Using a UK Denon amp in the US

Just brought 2 Denon PMA 250SE amps from the UK to the US and neither of them are working. Power light is on when I connect them to the socket through a standard travel converter.

As I am TOTALLY ignorant of all things electrical, could this be anything to do with the power supply being different....or are my speakers broken?

Thanks

Liam

Most Disappointing Interview Q/A of the Week

From the August issue of Wired magazine:

Question: OK, let's talk tips. What's your home music setup? How do you keep all the wires and cords to a minimum?

Martha Stewart: I live in an old house with no closets and no built-ins. I hate big cupboards. So, where do you put your stereos and all that the stuff? The solution is easy: Put an iPod in each room like in a drawer. Add wireless speakers and the sound system disappears into the room. It's so simple and you don't have to buy all that crap. You know how many years of crap I had?
