Hola,
As long as we have this cool Entry Level Forum, I thought I'd try to make a thread for a commonly asked question: Which "budget turntable?"
Since Stereophile can't review EVERY entry at this price point, I thought I'd start things out with a list of turntable at about that price point that I've heard, and maybe other people can add to it as a resource for future "new shoppers!"
I'll try to stick to tables with arms included for now...
I admit to being a semi-convinced skeptic when it comes to cables and interconnects; I can readily hear differences between cables and interconnects even though part of me does not want to admit that this is possible.
Yet, I am a holdout on the concept of special subwoofer interconnects. I have a nice flexible Monoprice RCA terminated interconnect that seems to do fine. But if this can be improved upon in an audible way I am interested.
I am going to sell my Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab box sets ... "The Beatles" and "The Rolling Stones". The Beatles was played 3 times and the The Stones was played once for recording to tape. They were played on a SOTA vacuum turntable, but it's been too long for me to remember the tonearm and cartridge I had at the time. Is eBay the best place to sell these? And what would you say a fair market price would be?
Cheers,
Gerry
Has anyone tried any of the VTA adjusters for the Rega arms? I currently have the Expressimo piece, but it only adjusts for VTA on the intial set up and then is a fixed height unless I loosen the nut beneath the table for each adjustment. That's a bit of a pain for each disc. I've seen the Pete Riggle VTAF which looks interesting. Of course, everyone claims improved sound for this product even without adjusting VTA. (I thought "blacker blacks" was just for TV's.) I can understand the idea of a gravity held arm with this device but it almost seems a bit like a Rube Goldberg design.
I've gotten lots of good advice re. my Spica TC-50s. I moved into my modest new house a year ago. The layout of my living room doesn't permit me to center the equipment between the speakers and my Kimber speaker cable is about 3 feet short of one speaker now that my equipment is offset from the speakers.
Here's the question:
Do you recommend a long run of ICs from the pre-amp to the amp, with a short run between the speakers, or do you recommend a longer run of speaker cable and just leave my amp connected to my pre-amp via my 1 meter pair of Kimber PBJs?
