Living with a Hernia

Living with a Hernia

Because, three weeks later, my back, butt, and legs were still hurting, I decided to go to the doctor. My doctor is an audiophile. He had had a wonderful time at the Home Entertainment Show last May. He's mostly attracted to the more exotic loudspeakers such as the Proclaim Audioworks DMT-100 and Loiminchay Mandarin Supreme, but he's also very enthusiastic about smaller, more affordable designs from ZVOX</a> and Audioengine</a>.

Integrated Amp vs separates

I've been dealing with a local guy who seems pretty knowledgable. He suggested I may be better off buying separate amp/pre-amp versus an integrated component as the sensitive electronics in the pre-amp would not be subjected to the heat generated by a separate amplifier. Another guy who works for the sister store 90 miles away told me by having separates you can introduce another variable by having the additional interconnect between amp and pre-amp and believed that an integrated amp was the way to go. By the way, I'm looking at Cambridge, Marantz, and Anthem components.

Elvis in the Dark

Elvis in the Dark

Living in Stereo has promoted this Daniel Wolff essay on "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" since its publication in Threepenny Review in 1999. I read it on the occasion of Elvis' 72nd birthday and I agree that it's a fine piece of writing—and well worth linking to.

Installing a Dedicated AC Line

Installing a Dedicated AC Line

The most important change made to the system was one that held up the writing of my review of the Mark Levinson No.23.5 power amplifier for several months, such was its anticipated impact. Though my listening room is well-equipped with wall sockets, there are actually only two 15A circuits serving these outlets. Ever since I had converted what had hitherto been our house's master bedroom into my listening room, I had intended to run new circuits to it.

rega planar 3 / dynavector 10x5 (am i being stupid?)

My current system is: Rega planar 3, linn k5 cartridge
Rotel ra-04 amp
Rega Elys (mk1) speakers

I now need a new cartridge. I have read good things about the dynavector 10x5 (would this be ok in my mm phone stage?)but am wondering whether it is overkill spending so much on the cartridge, i.e. is it worth it?
Any advice is much appreciated. thanks dave

receiver to speaker impedance matching

Hi to everyone! Im a newbie in this world of hifi systems, and im very interested in having a nice set-up and needs your help! I have an onkyo av receiver tx-ds777,2 infinity primus 150, 2 polk audio r30, 2 bose 401 and an infinity bu2 sub. As far as i know the av receiver is designed for 6 ohms spkrs only, the infinity and the polk audios are I thinks 8 ohms. while the bose 401s are 4 ohms...would I be able to hook up these speakers to my receiver without damaging it? coz i heard that if u use a 4 ohms speaker into a 6 0r 8 ohms receiver, it would toast the receiver! Is this true?
