Thinking about a Marantz 6100 Turntable

Hi everybody... just started listing to vinyl again... dug out my old turntable (JVC AL-A155). I only paid $100 at circuit city 10+ years ago... I assume I could do better.

So should I buy an old Marantz 6100... There's a completely refurbed on on eBay with a new stylus. It's within local pick up distance so I'm thinking about it. What do you guys think? I would rather have one of those nicer ones listed in the post-it here, but even $500 for me is tough pill to swallow at this point (I still need to get a record cleaner too)

A partially mummified hadrosaur has been discovered in North Dakota. It's probably the most complete dinosaur ever found—it even has intact skin (with stripes) and possibly even soft tissue. But does it have a head? The head's the best part!

post-acoustic audiophiles?

I've really enjoyed AlexO's post that has dwelt on pro audio gear etc.

I seem to fit well into the old-audiophile camp -- my serious listening tends to be acoustic music recorded live. (Having a bit of run on Dufay masses at the moment, plus a side helping of Glenn Gould).

However, it does seem that there is a potential world of recorded music that has subtlety to be explored with a fine system that is not based on acoustic music.

Sigh, The Golden Compass opens this week and the kooks are out denouncing it as "atheist propaganda." I read—and greatly enjoyed—Pullman's trilogy and I thought it was more an argument with Milton than with God himself.

PBS has posted a site dedicated to Nikola Tesla, my candidate for coolest scientist ever. Among other things, it includes a virtual tour o the Niagara Falls electrical generating plant and a fascinating hint that Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) was created out of fear that the USSR had perfected his charged-particle beam weapon (you see, there's this huge controversy over what happened to his papers after his death).

Sam Tellig doesn't call the office often. In the seven years that I've been at Stereophile, Sam has called only a handful of times. When he does call, however, it's serious. Sam just called.

Live concerts on DVD totally neglected by audio and video magazines alike..

Live concerts on DVD have been totally neglected by audio and video magazines such as Stereophile, TAS and their home theater magazines. Some of the people interested in live music on DVD never watch movies and never buy music without the video component to it. All they care is live concerts! How did audio and video magazines miss that? Audio magazines always brag about speakers capable of reproducing live music. I think video lift not only the sound proper but helps appreciate the music as well.

Jon Carroll is always worth reading, but you really don't want to miss a column that has this lede: "This is such a wonderful story. It should serve as an example to us all, and as a shining light to the young. Yes, you can do something positive for society, while still breaking the law and cheesing everybody off! It's win-win."
