Tube preamp with Denon AVR-3801

I plan to purchase a tube preamp and hook it up to my Denon AVR-3801. Is it as easy as hooking up the tube preamp to one of the inputs on the receiver such as AUX, and selecting the "direct" mode on the receiver? My main intent for this setup is to improve the sound quality when playing music from my CD player. Thank you in advance.

Studio 2 Rant

To me they look like home theater speakers, announcing the end of high end audio, same as the 400 series amplifiers from Mark Levinson.. I never liked the sound (congested) of the Salons but I did like the original Studios, look and sound. Now I don't even care how they sound anymore. They are too ugly, hometheater like. Does Revel know that only provincial snobs will buy their speakers in the future?? The B&W 802D is much better value. The 802D has character, blood. The Studio II looks like any $5,000 speaker!

New to tube rolling...

I have a Yaqin MC-100B amp, which runs four KT88 output tubes, four 6N8P (or 6NS7 or 6H8C) tubes, and two 12AX7 preamp tubes. These are all Chinese tubes. With the speakers I have (Cerwin Vega VS-150) the amp sounds a bit bright. I'd like to warm it up a bit, and hopefully get a bit more in the bass department.

Where do you guys recommend I start? Any particular tubes you'd recommend for thumping bass on a budget?

Thanks!

Charles.

On weekends, I play guitar in a string band whose membership varies between two and five members, depending on the location of the job and the amount of pay offered. We're reasonably good at picking and singing, but we lack the originality that would make someone want to buy our albums, which is why we haven't made them. Our little group is McDonald's, not Le Circe or even Applebee's, and I'm at peace with that.

Advice welcome

We're getting back into the equipment purchase biz after 20 years. I have a pair of KEF 107 spkrs to start with and want to add amp/preamp, cd player and squeezebox (or like) to make a system. Our old system was a Mac C28 preamp, a Mac 200 watt amp, and an NAD CD player. Sound quality was fine. Any thoughts besides reading reviews? Anywhere in the Sacramento area We can listen to alternatives?

DVD-V and DVD-A authoring software

Does anyone here know of DVD-V authoring software that will allow placing varying sample rate and bit depth stereo PCM audio tracks on a DVD-V?

I am trying to create a DVD-V disc with a variety of uncompressed audio tracks to enable comparing, for example, 24/96 and 16/44 tracks of the same recording. (I will require listeners to close their eyes so this will be a blind test).
