Listening #61 Page 2

Whenever my family and I travel together, I catch a glimpse of how the human mind works. Immediately after checking into our hotel, my wife goes to work distributing the contents of our suitcases among the room's various cabinets, closets, and drawers. Then, the next morning, I discover the location of my underpants heuristically: seeking without knowing, in the hope that some newly learned pattern will be imprinted on my brain. Thus do I earn the luxury of complacence: Every morning thereafter, my things are right where I know they should be.

Anti-skating, my turntable rocks!

Got the new Stooges LP (not that great, as it turns out, IMHO). Anyway, there are 3 sides, so side 4 isn't really side 4, it's blank/smooth. Just for fun, I "played" side 4. When I lowered the stylus to it, it tracked smoothly and noiselessly, without moving a bit laterally. The tonearm was motionless when I placed the stylus near the outer edge of the record, or near the label, or in the middle. I presume that's a fair indicator that my anti-skating is set "just right".

Need help with my homework fo Mr. Marks' column.

Hola,

I'm working on my writing assignment for Mr. Marks' 'Fifth Element' project, but I am flummoxed.

One the one hand, are we supposed to write about songs with well crafted stories, with a beginning, a middle, and an end; have a point of view, an authorial tone (an attitude toward their subject matter,) and, for lack of a better word, a philosphy?

Or, are we supposed to be writing about songs or the rock era that we think could hold up to being sung a capella by the Ensemble Amarcord during a mixed program of classical and popular works?

Or both?

Cardboard Queen

Cardboard Queen

In her kittenage, before we adopted her, Bagheera was a deli cat. I don't want to psychoanalyze an animal with a brain the size of a walnut, but Bagheera loves cardboard boxes. She will lie on them for hours—unless we do something silly like pet her or notice her. Then she'll go sulk in the corner.

A Complete Newcomer asking for advice.

Hello all, Ive got one long or several short questions. Im entirely new to all this fancy stereo stuff. Any way, Ive just bought a Technics SL-1310 for $20, but it has no stylus (sp?) Anyway, Im Looking to purchace a receiver and some speakers which would allow me to truly enjoy my vinyls. Right now Im using some Klipsch computer speakers plugged into a Newmarc portable table, and its just not cutting it. Id be happy to spend $400 on a reveiver and another 400 on speakers But I dont know what I should look for.
