Hifi playing music or playing hifi ?

Hi

Id just like to get some thoughts on the idea that hifi seems to be getting less and less musical as it develops.

It just seems as if manufacturers are after a smooth mellow sound that doesnt cause offence. Im finding it very hard to find equipment particularly speakers that keep the dynamics of the music in place. The new equipment is well made and definetly sounds mellow but somehow it just doesnt seem to sound like live music in the room.

Does anyone share my thought ?

Stepping up my cartridge

So I've hit the point in my audiophile "addiction" that I've decided to make a big step up in my cartridge. Currently I'm running a sumiko oyster on a pro-ject 1 Expression III through a grado PH-1 preamp and a Linn Classik receiver. Having recently scored a job with an amazing grado hookup I'm naturally attracted to their parts (hence the PH-1 and soon a set of RS-1's). That being said, I'm not averse to trying other brands if they perform better for what I'm looking for.

George, by Chestnut Hill Sound

At some point during my time with George ($499), I lost a neighbor. The IT guy who sat in the cubicle immediately outside my office suddenly wasn't around anymore. Weeks later, I learned that the music had been bothering him. It had been too loud, I suppose. Or there had been too much of it. I'm not sure. I started apologizing to people: "Sorry about the music. It's just that I've got this new radio in my office. It's a lot of fun. His name is George."
