Hales Audio speakers

I am a noobie to high end audio systems and a friend of mine has given me a very hi end stereo system, and I have a few questions about it. All of the equipment is from the 1990's. The system consists of 2 Audio Research Classic 120's, AR DAC 1, AR LS2,Wadia CD,Etude tuner,Velodyne 18" subwoofer,Billy Bags audio stand and Hales Audio Two Signature speakers w/external crossovers. This is the most awesome system I have ever heard. My friend tells me it was about a $20,000 system in the 90's.The system was handed down to him,and he had no interest in it.

Yesterday's episode of Sunday Morning on CBS included a segment with Herbie Hancock, whose River: The Joni Letters won two big prizes at the 50th annual Grammy Awards: Album of the Year and Best Contemporary Jazz Album.

Subwoofer on carpet

Forums

I have had my REL Storm placed on the (new)carpet w/spikes for several months. The sound has been ok, but a little bit boomy for my taste. As an experiment I obtained a 16" sq. ceramic tile from Home Depot and put it under the sub.

I was thinking that the carpet and pad were adversly affecting the output by absorbing some freqs and trying to compensate, I was over driving the sub.

This Is Your Brain on Jazz

A study published in the open source science journal PLoS One investigates the neural processes of jazz improvisation. Johns Hopkins neuroscientists put piano players in a fMRI scanner with a special keyboard and asked them to perform different five-finger exercises: play a scale, play a melody, and improvise on either the scale or the melody.

Dahlquist DQ-10 loudspeaker Specifications

Dahlquist DQ-10 loudspeaker Specifications

The Dalhquist DQ-10 loudspeaker has not as yet been formally submitted for review. (The designer tells us he is still working on the low end.) We auditioned a pair at the one local dealer we could find who had the DQ-10s on demo, and were immensely impressed. Obviously, Jon Dahlquist is on to something that other speaker designers have been overlooking, for, despite the multiplicity of driver speakers in the system, the DQ-10 sounds like one big speaker. There is no awareness of crossovers or separate drivers (except at the low end, about which more subsequently), and the overall sound has a degree of focus and coherence that is surpassed only by the Quad full-range electrostatic, which don't go as low at the bottom or as far out at the top.

Budget system for <$300

Hello, this is going to be my first good sound system. I'm currently looking at two possible routes - either getting a pair of active/powered speakers or getting an amp + speakers.

For the first option, I'm looking at the Audioengine 5 speakers which seem to have excellent reviews. For the second option I'm looking at Pioneer Elite A35r + Polk Audio Monitor 50 or Sony SSF-5/6/7000 floorstanding speakers.

The Beginning of My System: Help Please

I want to build a system revolving around my vinyl collection and so that I can finally enjoy the records i've begun to accumulate over the past year and a half.
What I have: A Rega P1 and 2 crates full of records.

What I need: a phono preamp to match the MM cartridge, power amp, preamp, integrated? (?)--many options--and of course, some loudspeakers.
