Rage Against The Machine

Rage Against The Machine

In Aural Robert in the April issue of Stereophile, Amoeba owner David Prinz and I discuss his label, Amoeba Records, and his ongoing program to reissue Gram Parsons live sets. Needless to say however, I also talked with him about the ever more bizarre situation that the record business now finds itself in. As the owner of the biggest and best independent record stores on planet Earth, his opinion carries more than a little weight. Here's a sampling of what he said about the biz and the specter of iTunes.

Vienna acoustics help

I have a pair of vienna acoustics motzart grand, i drive them using arcam AVR300.
I just moved into a new apartment, i am trying to set them up.
its a 10x14 room and floor is hardwood they call it pumpkin pine wood floor, I am in Maine, so that could be a local name.
I noticed that when i speak it kind of booms in the room.

so i am trying to listen to my speakers, I have tried various positioning techniques, everything, i don't get any sort of pleasure listening to music at all, so i have completely stopped listening to music for now.

Why does vibration control work?

While not everyone here will agree, I expect that the majority of us has found that placing system components on a good solid equipment rack improves the sound.

I was amazed at the improvement realized when I moved my equipment form a heavy MDF shelved cabinet that I had made to a decent quality Target stand (manufacturer, not store) which I borrowed from a friend. I then bought a PolyCrystal stand that made yet again a large improvement.

Ornette!

Ornette!

Heads up. Ornette Coleman’s group is playing at the Town Hall in New York City on March 28. If you have any interest in modern jazz (or modern music, period), you should buy a ticket now before they sell out.

4' wall?

I'm a newbie building a home theater room and need some help. My room will be 11'x13'x8' with hardwood floor, no windows. All walls/ceiling are plasterboard. Planned viewing is in the 11' direction. I'd like to make the wall behind the TV a half-wall, about 4' high. Behind that is another room 10' deeper and 15' wide. The half-wall is only to help the rooms feel open. Will this screw up my 7.1 surround? I'm more concerned with sound than aesthetics and will enclose the room if needed. Would appreciate any help, thanks.

The AudioEngine 5's - an odd observation - an even stranger problem

Last week, some of you will remember that I was in the market for some speakers - my 1994 AIWA unit was not cutting it.

In the end I decided to go with the AudioEngine 5's for a number of reasons. Here is the thing that has me confused:

The AudioEngine 5's sound clearer, more detailed, and far more spacious than my old AIWA's, but... they sound smaller.
