The Art of the Turntablist

The Art of the Turntablist

In a sense, DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist are music historians and preservationists. In "The Hard Sell," they take us on a scratching, mixing, looping journey through musical genres and fads, from the wildly obscure to the completely commercial, while employing not one, not two, but <i>eight</i> turntables and a collection of original 45rpm seven-inch singles that would make <a href="http://forum.stereophile.com/photopost/showphoto.php/photo/84/size/big/… Fremer's hair</a> go straight.

Recommendations for cheap speakers?

I am a recent graduate who just purchased a house, so I'm trying to cut back on spending. I couldn't pass up, however, a Panasonic SA-HE75 that I found for $75.

Of course, now I have to buy speakers for it. Can anyone recommend a good set that can be had for under $300? The unit has room for two mains, two surrounds, a center, and a subwoofer, so I'd like to fill as many of those slots as possible. Am I just dreaming?

Thank you all for your feedback!

Paco De Lucia

Forums

While I don't think this belongs in the jazz forum, I don't think it belongs in the classical one either. Anyway, my brother sent me this video last night of Paco De Lucia. I've loved and listened to Paco for years and have seen him perform a few times, but he seemed jaded and uninspired. Like he was putting on a show without any regards to the music, just to fill in his legend status.

Dedicated to Vinyl

Dedicated to Vinyl

At some point, I hope to post a long list of links (A Long List of Links) to sites that specialize in vinyl LPs. This will be for you, dear readers. But also for me! I have been collecting the web addresses and adding them to a Favorites folder. If you know of some sites that offer great selections of LPs (new or used) and you want to help me go deeper into debt (just kidding, Clifton), please do share! Together we will build a database of all the World Wide Web's most alluring online stores. (Not <i>those</i> kinds of stores! LP stores, you naughty naughties.)

iPhone Signal Scope

Wow! Now this thing is cool! A new app for $30 you can download for an iphone which uses the built-in microphone and hardware to turn it into a portable a real-time spectrum analyzer and oscilloscope. For those that have an iphone it's a quick and convenient way to do basic room analysis or measure equipment. Snapshots can be saved at will and saved for later. I have not used it seriously yet, but so far it seems to work very well and is very sensitive.

Three cheers for Ethan

Remarkable how a few folks get obsessed with taking shots at Ethan W. Goodness - is there a way to count the number of times that the name Ethan comes up in posts by persons X, Y, and Z? It must be 1000's of times - they seem fixated. Y'all don't have to agree with him, just post your opinions - but the vehemence of the personal attacks and insults is off-putting and certainly undermines whatever arguments you are putting forth. And I think it detracts from the atmosphere of the forum.
