"Happiness won't leave me alone," says the bird in his nest.

I have a little space heater that I keep in my kitchen because the kitchen is where it's coldest. The wind whips against our old apartment building and rattles the old windows and sets the sparrows and the starlings fluttering into my thin walls where they've made their nests. If there was ever any insulation in those thin walls, it must be long gone.

Picnic Plate Recordings

Last night, I witnessed a modern marvel of DIY audio. At the Sidewalk Cafe, my regular haunt, Steve Espinola, resident alternative instrument maker and sound inquisitor, presented one of his latest developments: the reproduction of sound without any electricity. His goal is so that in the possiblity that electricity may not exist or world suffer massive destruction, that those left over (or discovering our planet) will be able to listen to our music.

How you ask?

Using a subwoofer for stereo music

Hi everyone. I have recently purchased the JVX EX-A10 micro system (http://www.hometheatermag.com/hometheaterinabox/906jvc/) which has an amazingly natural and breathy sound for the price. Since I'm only going to use it for stereo music playback, I was wondering whether the use of a small sub (JVC provides a sub output) unit (e.g. Velodyne CHT-8R or some of the small Yamaha YSTs) could improve the bass and the overall music quality or rather blur it (especially at this price level).

Mark & Daniel A400 amp

Forums

Hi, I've just come across this amp while testing out Swan Diva 5.1 speakers. The amp sounded good to me but I have only heard the Cambridge Audio 840A so I don't have much to compare it to. The guy is asking US$1600 for the amp. Is this a good buy in your opinion? I cant find much info on this amp on the net. How would you rate this amp?
Thanks

Tolliver & Moran Do Monk at Town Hall

Tolliver & Moran Do Monk at Town Hall

It’s a bad idea to gin up expectations, but two concerts this week at Town Hall in New York City are worth the risk. Each commemorates Thelonious Monk’s big-band concert at the same Town Hall on Feb. 28, 1959—exactly 50 years ago—but in very different ways. This Thursday, Feb. 26, Charles Tolliver leads a 10-piece band on a straightforward (if that word can describe anything related to Monk) re-creation of the concert. The next night, Feb. 27, Jason Moran leads an octet on a bold re-conceptualization of the event, a sort of post-modern audio-video collage that aims to capture the spirit of Monk’s music while also tapping into its hidden roots and their links to Moran himself.

How about an audio scavenger hunt...

Slow day at work, yay!

How about:

Interenet search, 500 dollars or less, which USED speaker would you buy...pretending that you would have to insert it in your system and live with it.

(500 bucks is the sales price, no consideration for tax, shipping, etc.)

I haven't looked yet, just curious to see what we'd all come up with.
