AV123 Onix Reference 1 Mk.II loudspeaker

Audiophile societies are frequently sources of interesting new equipment to review. Recently, trolling New York's Audiophile Society, I discovered a tremendous buzz about the Onix Reference 1 Mk.II, an affordable bookshelf speaker from AV123. Founded by Audio Alchemy cofounder Mark Schifter, AV123 is a Colorado-based manufacturer and retailer that specializes in affordable audio gear, mostly speakers and electronics, which it sells exclusively over the Internet with a 30-day money-back guarantee. AV123's factories in China and Colombia design, manufacture, and distribute speakers under the brand names Onix, X-Series, and Rocket, and, I am told, also make speakers for a number of other companies. If the name Onix rings a bell, this former UK brand has long been known for its dedication to making affordable audio gear. AV123 bought Onix from the Rogers speaker company more than 10 years ago.

4MM DAT playback???

I have an ancient Sony D7 DAT recorder/player. I last used this maybe 10 years ago and have a score of old tapes recorded.

When I put away the tape player, it was clean and operated perfectly. Today I broke it out, plugged in a headphone, powered it up and inserted a tape, pushed play..it read 'load' and then did nothing at all. I also cannot rewind or fast forward the tapes or run a cleaning tape in the unit.

Does anyone remember anything about these things? The owners manual does not say zip about this problem.

In short, it loads fine but does not play at all.

Why doesn't Stereophile publish pictures of their reviewer's rooms?

I posted some comments under Stephen Mejias' blog entry regarding the Gizmodo article on Mr. Fremer. Here's the link, as I am concerned that not a whole lot of people will see it

Replacing a pair of B&W DM 302s

My roommates blew out my B&W DM 302s. Quote the guilty: "We had a party last night and the speakers started to smell and then stopped working." Great. They've agreed to kick me $250, which was the retail price back in '98 when they first came out (I picked them up for $50 from a friend of the family). These were great speakers and I'm sad to see them go, but this unfortunate episode does give me a chance to upgrade (I'm moving to my own place in June so I won't have to worry about my equipment being trashed). I've got a budget of about $400-500.

Last night I heard ...

Much more noise. The sort of noises that tells you where the recording was made and who stood where. The good kind of noise.

I added a fourth PS Audio Noise Harvester.

For years I thought no matter what I did to the system and the room I would always ultimately hear the vague outlines of my room imposing itself on the recording. With these in place, my room consistently dispappears and the venue comes forth. Amazing! I've heard numerous AC products and these are IMO special.

Last night I listened to ...

Dire Straits; Love Over Gold, Remaster CD

A classic that benefits from the remaster. Like DSOTM a disc you should have at least two copies of and preferrably one vinyl and one CD. $7.99 in the clearance bin at B. Dalton.

Music: 5
Sound: 5

Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown; No Looking Back CD

God! How's he get that band to play like that?! This is tighter than Basie or Ellington. No one swings the blues like Gatemouth. There are time signature changes here that I can't keep up with. Very, very unpredictable and utterly enjoyable!
