A Question of Reliability

A Question of Reliability

A letter in the April 1988 issue (Vol.11 No.4) from reader Harold Goldman, MD, decried the seemingly appalling failure rate of high-end products, citing a $10,000/pair power amplifier, an $11,000 turntable, and a $1500 CD player which had all been reported in recent issues as having failed during or shortly after testing by Stereophile. And Dr. Goldman's list was far from complete. We have also experienced during the past couple of years the failure, or inoperation upon delivery, of two $2500 solid-state power amplifiers, a $1700 subwoofer, a $5000 hybrid amplifier, two pairs of $1200 loudspeakers, several pairs of under-$1000 loudspeakers, and many CD players costing over $1000 each, mainly those based on Philips transports.

Some time ago I wrote about the need for high-end audio companies to constantly reinvent themselves: You may be receiving accolades for your latest and greatest product, but you'd also better be well along the path to developing its replacement. High-end audio is a field of constant change; no product remains supreme for long.

usb not ready for prime time?

There's a section in a competing audio publication this month dealing with USB DACs - the conclusion of the lead author is USB is simply not ready for prime time.

In particular, he argues the sound of USB pales in comparison to s/pdif.

I'm curious; what's been your experience?

note to mods: I assume mentioning a competing publication in this context is ok. If not, please let me know.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Americans who refuse to buy affordable medical coverage could be hit with fines of more than $1,000 under a health care overhaul bill unveiled Thursday by key Senate Democrats looking to fulfill President Barack Obama's top domestic priority.

I'm beginning to think the Democrats are just plain fucking stupid. I mean, politicians are stupid in general but this new shit is just priceless.

The Fall of SACD

It has come to my attention that BIS Records, an SACD label, has been recording in high-bit PCM, not DSD, since 2005. They were simply transcoding to SACD for the consumer disc release. This means that any rave review of a BIS recording since '05 was in effect, a rave for high-bit PCM. Was Kal one of those ravers ?

BIS now joins Sony, Naxos, DG and Telarc in dumping SACD.

Obama is making politics fun again

Harry Teague voted along the party line on the recent CAP/Tax bill that passed The House.

We just elected Rep. Harry Teague (D) into office to protect our oil assets in the Permian Basin. Harry is a well known oilman that has made a tidy fortune in the oil well servicing end of the business. He is also very aggressive having run out all his Texas competitors from The Basin so he has a virtual monopoly in his line of work. Anyway, he had a town hall meeting yesterday. I should have went. Here is an eyewitness account I received via email last night.
