Left Field Discoveries

New game. I'm sure we encounter a lot of moments when we discover something great COMPLETELY inadvertently. List them here, not just music-related. The only rule of this game is not to reply with snide jackass comments, like "Oh, that ain't so great." We have enough threads for the Tourettic assholes of the world around here, so respect: this thread is just for sharing your moments.

I'll go first.

1. The Largo from Vivaldi's Double Concerto for Oboes, PV535.

Hi,

15 years ago when I was in the US I was an avid SP subscriber. Since then I have returned home, to Greece, and discontinued, since I served the army and took me a while to setup the equipment i brought along. It is pretty outdated, but at the time quite descent sounding:

Museatex active x-over
2x Bryston 4B NRB amplifiers
Melos tube preamp
Rotel RCD-855 CD player w/upgrades
Pioneer AT-670 tuner
Custom made Dynaudio loudspeakers
Grado headphones

The Hovland Company is no more. Less than 10 full years after its incorporation, the manufacturer of highly coveted Hovland Musicap propylene-film and aluminum-foil capacitors and visually striking electronic components has dismissed its staff and closed the doors of its manufacturing facility and headquarters in Los Angeles.

Cruising

I haven't driven a car since I left the US 6 months ago. A car is impractical and expensive here (SE Asia). Everyone drives a scooter/moped and even though I had never driven one before, I was able to zip around town on my Yamaha Nouvo within a week. It's a very practical mode of transportation. you don't feel the traffic, you zip between cars, and driving from 25-40mph, the moped is at its best. I tried taking it on a highway and even though it can generate speeds up to about 65mph, I gave up at 50mph. I was scared.

The Fifth Element #55 Contacts

When I was a kid, I saw the Marlon Brando remake of Mutiny on the Bounty. I'm sure you know the story—lots of bad-guy/good-guy tension between Captain Bligh and Fletcher Christian. There's also an overlay of class conflict, but with a twist: The up-and-comer is the sadist, while it's the aristocrat who is nature's nobleman.
