Recently having issues with my upgraded Rega P1 turntable. Glass platter and Ortofon OM20 cartridge. For some reason, vinyl now sounds like garbage thru my speakers (Monitor Audio RS6's). Connects into a McIntosh C28 pre-amp, to a MC2105 amp. For a period of time, everything sounded great. Now I am having problems with the stereo mode on the pre-amp; only if I use the L to L & R mode do I hear sound out of both speakers; mono works ok. I've plugged in a digital source into the aux input on the pre-amp and everything works and sounds fine.

Although I'll be spending most of my time at Stereophile reviewing affordable gear, I will from time to time examine so-called "trickle-down" designs from high-end designers who have made their mark in the upper-price echelons. More and more, such designers are taking what they've learned and applying it to less-expensive products in order to broaden their customer base. Cary Audio Design, for example, of single-ended triode fame, has entered the ring with the SLM-100 pentode monoblocks.

During the past 10 years, perfectionist audio has garnered for itself an impressive accretion of lore, much of which has never been accepted by the so-called scientific community.

Before I buy a tube amp, I want to try adding a phono preamp to my current setup to see if I can improve the sound with what I have. I have an Onkyo solid-state integrated amp with a built-in phono stage. Some of the tube amps I'm considering for eventual purchase also have a built-in phono stage.
