John Surman's Brewster's Rooster

John Surman's Brewster's Rooster

John Surman, a saxophonist of jazz, folk, church, and avant-garde influences, has been a longtime denizen in the ECM stable without gaining much renown. When he recently played at a New York club, leading a rhythm section of guitarist John Abercrombie, bassist Drew Gress, and drummer Jack DeJohnette, he acknowledged to the crowd that he was the only player who needed introducing.

Ok, the dumb 'PC as server' questions

I am considering trying to use a netbook as source...The questions:

1. Is anyone aware of a netbook that has a CD or DVD tray?
2. is it possible to connect a netbook to a DAC without using an USB port (ie, does the thing have a digital out anywhere?)
3. does anyone know of a netbook with decent hard drive capacity?

I want to run a netbook via a digital out to a basic benchmark DAC...(no usb port)

4. Is this possible...

I do not desire to spend a fortune on this experiment. All I want to buy is the netbook....

Govt Regulators Are Good People

TIM PARADIS

NEW YORK (AP) - Regulators have shut down nine banks, including California National Bank.

The move Friday brings the number of failed U.S. banks this year to 115 as the still-weak economy produces a stream of loan defaults.

The banks are mostly in the West and had combined assets of $19.4 billion at the end of September.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation says U.S. Bank in Minneapolis agreed to assume the deposits and most of the assets of the banks.

Roasted pumpkin seeds...

If y'all are going to roast your pumpkin seeds, here's my favorite hint:

Put the pulp in a big bowl of water and then harvest the floating seeds, pulp sinks.

You can also squeeze the pulp and free the seeds very easily in water.

Then, seeds onto an over pan, some olive oil, kosher salt, 325 degrees for 25 minutes.

Yum!

It says something for the state of technology that, after a quarter of a century, there still is no authoritative explanation for why so many high-end audiophiles prefer tubes. Tubes not only refuse to die, they seem to be Coming back. The number of US and British firms making high-end tube equipment is growing steadily, and an increasing number of comparatively low-priced units are becoming available. There is a large market in renovated or used tube equipment—I must confess to owning a converted McIntosh MR-71 tuner—and there are even some indications that tube manufacturers are improving their reliability, although getting good tubes remains a problem.
