Chess Reissues

Has anybody else dipped into the Chess reissues of the last year or two?

I never thought the label was well-served by prior reissues, excluding the Chess boxes. But the newer collections - like three volumes of Bo Diddley and the indescribably good Little Walter set (where has this music been all my life?)are first rate.

The Labor of Love

The Labor of Love

I wonder if <a href="http://blog.stereophile.com/stephenmejias/not_not_fun/">Karen</a&gt;, over at <a href="http://www.othermusic.com/index.cgi">Other Music</a>, has gotten around to listening to Sex Worker’s <i><a href="http://www.notnotfun.com/now.html">The Labor of Love</a></i>. I’d like to tell her about it. I probably wouldn’t tell her like this:

Analogue Source component

A bit hilarious of a choice, no?. Sorry to say, but the SME 20/12 is in a totally different league to the VPI SSM Ref - and, of course, in a totally different price band too.

If the award is for value for money, then perhaps VPI's own Classic or the TW should be taking that particular prize.

Grabbing the Crystal by the Ball

Grabbing the Crystal by the Ball

Every once in a while, and particularly around the first of the year, news writers (of which I am one) get the urge to play oracle, laying our credibilities on the line by attempting to divine what the coming year will bring. Since I am writing this at the end of January, the chances of my miscalling my shots have already been reduced by a factor of 0.083. But there are still 11 months to go, and some possibility that a prediction or two may be wrong. Nonetheless, I shall intrepidly grab the bull by the horns, the crystal by the ball, and the opportunity of the moment to take an educated guess at what the rest of 1988 holds for audio.

Rhino Records offering lossless downloads

Rhino Records, the label for several major artists (Led Zeppelin, Emmylou Harris, Doors, Modern Jazz Quartet, etc.) is now offering lossless downloads of portions their library - http://www.rhino.com/shop/format/Digital. The formats are Apple and WMA lossless and FLAC. The pricing is $14.99/album and $1.49/track.

The pricing is a bit high as you can buy the CD for less and rip it, but it's great to see a major label opening their library for at least CD quality downloads.
