The new duet album by Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden, <I>Jasmine</I> (on ECM), is a gorgeous piece of work: all standards, mainly ballads, nothing fancy (not overtly anyway), but such poignance and quiet passion; it’s a glimpse into the intimacy of the act of making art.

Martin Gardner died.

Martin Gardner used to write the math puzzles in Scientific American and was author of many terrific math based books.

He wrote a great book called "The Annotated Alice" with many references about the inside jokes and allusions in the Lewis Carroll books.

He lived to a ripe old age, so I mention him as an example of a life well lived rather than mourning a premature demise.
