Another rookie question

I am playing with my iMAC. I seldom use it as the rest of my computers are PC's. I have removed 90% of the programs and files from it and have installed Channel D Pure Music software...Now the question. It appears I can run a Toslink optical digital out from the iMAC. I need to run a Toslink cable maybe 25 ft to my DAC...I have never tied to run an optical cable so far...

I know the optical cables are less than optimum but my DAC only has an optical input unused. What is the limit for a Toslink conection??

Unusual grunge on record

Hello,

I cleaned an old record that I had just purchased with my normal cleaning regimen (MOFI Super Deep Cleaner + Nitty Gritty record cleaning liquid on the machine). When I played the record, at the end when I raised the stylus, I noticed it was covered with a black, ash-like substance (like cigarette ash). It completely covered the stylus so that for a second I thought the stylus had broken off.

I then recleaned it with MOFI's enzymatic cleaner followed by a steam clean, and then the Nitty Gritty again. On playing the record, I had the same result, just slightly less ash.

Ayre Acoustics DX-5 universal disc player

Ayre Acoustics DX-5 universal disc player

The old Saab slogan, "Find Your Own Road," was so good that the old General Motors, which once owned Saab, had to kill it—just as the newly revived GM tried, in a "Call It Chevrolet" memo, to kill "Chevy." GM did a U-turn on that one the very next day, but "Find Your Own Road" never returned, and is available for Ayre Acoustics to use. I can't think of a better slogan for a company that I admire almost as much as I do Saab.

Consider this: While Ayre calls its new DX-5 ($10,000) a "universal A/V engine," the disc player doesn't have a coaxial or a TosLink S/PDIF input. That appears crazy to me, but to Ayre, no. They've found their own road.
