There are components that stick in a reviewer's memory long after they have been crated up and entrusted to the tender mercies of UPS. When I reviewed the Verona Master Clock from English company dCS in March 2005, the sound it allowed the combination of a dCS Verdi transport, Purcell</A> upsampler, and Elgar Plus D/A processor to achieve from SACD was the best I had heard from my system—better, even, than I remember getting from the EMM Labs SACD transport and processor I had borrowed for a weekend a few months earlier. But at what price? The stack of four dCS components adds up to a cool $45k—"Yes, the complete dCS system is hip," I wrote in the conclusion to my review. "But $45k's worth of hip? That's a question I can't answer, I'm afraid, what with school fees and mortgages and taxes." The megabux dCS stack thus had to go back to the distributor at the end of the review period.

Getting a name check from the mainstream press can be a good thing. But as Wes Phillips wrote in his blog</A> on February 5, "to paraphrase Mason Williams on winning an Emmy Award, 'It's like being kissed by a girl with bad breath—you appreciate the honor, but...'"

Quad ESL-989 Demo Units vs JM Lab's Electras vs Triangle's Magellans

Forums

Guys,

I was into buying a pair of JM Lab Electra Be Floorstanders (EUR 5.200 / pair), when a Dealer in the South of France offered me to compare the electras to a pair of ESL-989s he had in his showroom.

Although the Electras were very good, they sounded far less convincing than the ESL 989's, with a number of different amps, both solid-state and tubed. We also listened to the top-of-the range Triangles (I guess the Magellans).

Who's more credible? Pro Sound people, or "audiophiles"? w/magic wires

At most live venues, key is to have RELIABLE good sounding equipment, cables that work, hold up to stress and abuse. Yet when "audiophiles" need wires, they somehow need some bizzare concepts, and some kind of nonsense to reproduce the music that was originally done with just heavy duty, reliable, strong, walked on, not lifted off the floor, since I guess the floor in a studio or live venus has different attributes than an "audiophiles" listening area. How come the "audiophiles" floor needs wires lifted off it, while real musicans, and sound people just let it hang.?

Looking for drive pulley for STASIS 1

If anyone knows a former distributor, the maker or a technician from the maker of the company that made the former Turntable Le Tallec Stasis 1. I hope that person will help me find the Drive pulley for my STASIS 1 Turntable made in France. Unfortunately I lost that part of that turntable making it unusable. I will appreciate any help to recuperate that equipment. I thank you in advance for you help. Please contact me at smark951@yaho0.com or 514-827-8648.

Again thank you.

Simon
